Vietnamese-Australian Beatmaker pastels Announces ‘Love Garden’ Album

March 24, 2023 BY Jason Currell

Today, Vietnamese producer pastels announces her latest album Love Garden. The nine-track project marks the first full-length the Melbourne-based instrumentalist (given name Annie Bui) has released with Nettwerk.

“’Love Garden’,” pastels describes, “is an album reflecting on love and relationships. As most of the project is instrumental, listeners are open to interpret the songs however they vibe with it. Ideally, my main goal is for listeners to feel like they are in a warm, romantic and luscious garden party.”

Today, pastels shares the project’s third single and title track, in collaboration with Grammy-nominated French producer Häzel. Wobbly bass lines interact with a boom-bap drum kit sample, with finger snaps and tambourine shakes peppered in for effect. pastels describes the song as encapsulating “the feeling of joy when you’re with someone you adore.”

The “Love Garden” single follows the release of the February single “Could’ve Been U,” with Jessica Domingo (HERE), which picked up strong support in both the retail and blog spaces. Stereofox lauded the track, saying it was “simply put, mesmerizing,” while HYPEFRESH praised the song for its “heartfelt reflection” and “sensual mood.” “Could’ve Been U” also scored several Spotify editorial additions, including New Music Friday AU/NZ (357K likes), R&B Connect (191K likes) and R&B Feels (104K likes).

Love Garden’s location in a garden party continues pastels’ theme of picking distinct settings for each of her projects, one of the major reasons for her proficiency in world-building through instrumentals. Previously, she released a double EP with Bay Area producer Mr. Hong that focused on emulating a coffee shop—cafe a.m. and cafe p.m..

Artist Biography:

pastels is the artist project of Melbourne producer and musician Annie Bui. Growing up in a music-forward environment, Annie picked up both the piano and the violin at a young age and went on to major in music composition in college. During her senior year, a trip to Los Angeles sparked her interest in music production, and pastels was born. Her first release came in late 2018 with the Thoughts on Keys EP and she has consistently delivered new music since.

Notably. pastels has made strides in bringing her lofi-influenced sound beyond the digital world. Her debut live performance was held alongside the opening of popular Korean bingsu ice cream shop Scoopy. Additionally, pastels has created a 2020 radio mix in conjunction with 88rising, worked on a 2021 future/soul vinyl compilation album curated by Ta-ku and most recently, released a rendition of “Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book for a Disney-backed compilation album reimagining classic Disney tunes with a fresh lens.
