Swedish-Greek folk artist Plàsi Unveils New EP ‘Salamina’
July 30, 2024 BY Bailey Vigliaturo
Today, Swedish-Greek folk artist Plàsi unveils his highly anticipated EP, Salamina, via Nettwerk. Joined by producer Björn Yttling (Lykke Li, Peter Björn & John, First Aid Kit), this collection of songs marks a significant turning point in Plàsi’s artistic journey, as he ventures beyond his signature sound and embraces a bold new direction.
The inspiration for Salamina sprouted on the idyllic shores of the namesake island, just off the coast of Athens. Plàsi’s unique cultural heritage, a blend of Swedish and Greek influences, finds its voice amidst the island’s serene landscapes. The EP’s title track embodies this artistic leap, showcasing Plàsi’s courage to explore uncharted sonic territories. The raw, unfiltered essence of the island fueled his creative process, pushing him to rely on instinct and forge a new path.
Plàsi shares this on his latest project, “There are places in the world that are showing the way without being aware of it themselves. Salamina is a rural island just outside of Athens, where life changes in a second from the cosmopolitan capital next door. With a relatively rough but honest expression it tells us a lot about life and its natural beauty. It tells us that happiness doesn’t have to come from perfection, but also from honesty. It tells us about everyday life, and how being able to enjoy the small moments without too big expectations matters. In this environment, full of mysterious feelings and unexpected views, the idea of this EP was born with the title track ‘Salamina’. An environment that made me think outside of my own box and convinced me to take steps. This EP is a journey from the previously indie folk centered productions to hints of a newer and bigger sound with more indie pop elements.”
The Salamina EP features the tracks, “Avignon,” “Ordna sig,” “All of Me,” and “Innocent.” A collaboration with Björn Yttling that surprised even Plàsi himself, “Avignon” marked a departure from his typical sound. Born in the studio, the track represents the exciting meeting point of their artistic visions. Inspired by the dream of a road trip from Sweden to the French Riviera, “Avignon” takes listeners on a captivating sonic adventure, mirrored by the official video directed by Olof Grind.
Marking Plàsi’s first foray into singing in Swedish, “Ordna sig” features soaring vocals amidst a backdrop of layered strings and steady percussion. Inspired by artists like Håkan Hellström and Anna Ternheim, the song weaves a thread of Plàsi’s Swedish heritage into the narrative. This uplifting folk-pop track transcends genres with its indie vibe and grand soundscape. Plàsi’s musical journey embodies the fusion of his cultural background, a blend of Swedish and Greek influences.
With “All of Me,” Plàsi contemplates the thrill and fear of venturing into unknown territory, questioning the comfort of familiar soundscapes. Co-written with Yttling, the song marks a sonic shift towards indie pop elements, hinting at the evolution to come. A nostalgic ode to youth, closing track “Innocent” reflects on simpler times when problems seemed less daunting. It serves as a call to action for the younger generation, urging them to embrace exploration and seize opportunities before life’s complexities take hold.
Plàsi, currently residing in the Netherlands, continues to refine his distinctive sound, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of his diverse background. Salamina EP proves to be a captivating journey for listeners, showcasing Plàsi’s artistic evolution and his exploration of new sonic landscapes.
