Sweden’s Sarah Klang Feels Like The “Worst Mom” Today

September 15, 2023 BY Bailey Vigliaturo

Sweden’s Sarah Klang shares new single “Worst Mom” from her upcoming album Mercedes, out October 20th via Nettwerk. With this album, Klang left her twenties behind and welcomed her first child, whom the album is named for. Mercedes continues the steam-of-conscious storytelling that has endeared her to so many, but now with more candor, as she delivers 10 songs grounded in deeply personal yet also commonly shared human experiences.

While she celebrates the beautiful moments of becoming a mother, as on previous singles, the title track “Mercedes” and “Magic Stone,” she also doesn’t shy away from writing about the difficulties and challenges too, as heard on “Worst Mom.” The single and its accompanying video encompass the rollercoaster of emotions experienced in those early days as Klang sings, “I feel like the worst mom today…probably gonna cry all day.”

“It was important to me to show all the sides of motherhood,” Klang explains. “The good and the bad days.”

Of the video, she tells Under The Radar, “It’s a twisted, exaggerated nightmare day as a new mother. It’s almost like a parody of the feelings you experience. This is how I could FEEL when I was sleep deprived and my baby had been screaming for three weeks. I also wanted to capture sleepless nights and endless walks. And the great love for your child.”

Klang has always had a talent for autobiographical song writing, like on her acclaimed debut Love in The Milky Way (2018), which won Best Album at the Swedish Grammis awards. It continued on Creamy Blue (2019), her second album that earned another nomination for ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Alternative Pop’ at the Grammis awards, and another nod for ‘European Album Of The Year’ at the IMPALA Awards.  While her sound had previously touched upon a mix of influences (‘60 and ‘70s pop, Americana, an undercurrent of country), 2021’s VIRGO – her most well-received album to date – then broadened her scope to include elements of ‘80s synth-pop (again winning a Swedish Grammy for Best Alternative Pop). Tastemaker praise followed, notably from i-D, Rolling Stone and Clash.
