Indie R&B Artist cehryl Shares New Track and D.I.Y Video

Today, bedroom soul artist cehryl shares her first single of 2020, “Moon Eyes.” The singer-songwriter and producer has spent the past year working on new music to follow her debut album Slow Motion.
When asked about the track, cehryl said, “When I wrote this I was obsessed with that Penny and the Quarters song from the movie Blue Valentine. The consistently shameless, confessional lyrics in love songs in the 60’s that painted the same clichés over and over again (the moon, the stars, roses, flowers, cigarettes, starlight, black and white movies). I was moved by how timeless the writing is in jazz standards, and wanted to recreate that tone. ‘moon eyes’ is an unrequited love story. It is about the lightness and brightness of falling in love as a convenient shield or distraction from feeling disappointed by someone. It is about being abandoned, being left to wonder. specifically, to wonder with a childlike optimistic naivety (‘maybe you’ve gone to buy me flowers’).”
Acting on her love of film, the video was shot fairly D.I.Y. as a collaboration between her and director Jonny Ho in the hills above her home in Hong Kong. When asked about filming cehryl said, “Initially, being back in Hong Kong from LA scared me as I didn’t feel like I had as strong of an artistic community/friend group to collaborate and grow with. This video proved me wrong. Jonny and I spent several days driving around Hong Kong during the second wave of Covid with no particular itinerary in mind. We pieced together this video by way or obsessing over our favourite visual artists/filmmakers (Frank Lebon, Ruff Mercy, Wong Kar Wai), and figuring out editing methods via trial and error (we were heavy on the errors). Hopefully, this captures the moody vibrance of Hong Kong.”

Following High School in the UK, cehryl came to the United States from Hong Kong to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and post-college found herself in Los Angeles forming a tight-knit scene with friends Zack Villere, Mulherin, Dijon, Alex Szotak, and Soft Glas. “Moon Eyes” and single “Hide n Seek” (watch the new video for it now) follow her buzzy 2019 debut album Slow Motion which garnered her praise from Paper, Earmilk, i-D, Complex and more. After tours with Still Woozy and Ravyn Lenae she was slated to be on the road this summer opening for Jeremy Zucker in the U.S. and for Cavetown this fall. Both tours are on hold due to Covid-19 precautions for now. Stay tuned for more to come from cehryl.
