Australian Instrumentalist pastels Signs with Nettwerk, Shares New Single “Dreamfield”

January 27, 2023 BY Jason Currell

Nettwerk Music Group is thrilled to announce the signing of ethereal producer pastels. The Melbourne-based artist (given name Annie Bui) chose the name pastels as a reference to the soft yet eternally growing nature of her sound.

Today. pastels shares the single “Dreamfield,” her first release with Nettwerk. The track is a slow burner, with shimmering synths, a gentle tapping of bongos and a medley of FKJ-like piano chords and saxophone blrrps. As the song concludes, the natural sound of chirping crickets enter the composition.

Throughout her career, pastels has carved out a unique way of storytelling through instrumentals, and a major key in this is choosing distinct settings for her projects. In 2020, she released a double EP with Bay Area producer Mr. Hong that focused on emulating a coffee shop—cafe a.m. and cafe p.m.. Her upcoming project (details TBD) promises to continue this theme.

Artist Biography:

pastels is the artist project of Melbourne producer and musician Annie Bui. Growing up in a music-forward environment, Annie picked up both the piano and the violin at a young age and went on to major in music composition in college. During her senior year, a trip to Los Angeles sparked her interest in music production, and pastels was born. Her first release came in late 2018 with the Thoughts on Keys EP and she has consistently delivered new music since.

Notably. pastels has made strides in bringing her lofi-influenced sound beyond the digital world. Her debut live performance was held alongside the opening of popular Korean bingsu ice cream shop Scoopy. Additionally, pastels has created a 2020 radio mix in conjunction with 88rising, worked on a 2021 future/soul vinyl compilation album curated by Ta-ku and most recently, released a rendition of “Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book for a Disney-backed compilation album reimagining classic Disney tunes with a fresh lens.
