Folk Pop Sisters LULLANAS Release Debut LP ‘Pretty Lies & Time Machines’

Today, twin sister folk pop duo LULLANAS – Atisha and Nishita Lulla – release their anticipated full-length debut album, Pretty Lies & Time Machines. Co-produced with Keith Goodwin (Good Old War), the album features 11 harmony-laden musings about the persistently transformative nature of relationships, from the healing to the heartbreaking. They collaborated with several esteemed artists on the album’s songwriting, including Katelyn Tarver, Tommy Ashby, Marc Scibilia, and more. On the disarming nature of these songs, Atisha shares, “We kept ASMR in mind while making our album: soothing sounds, whispery vocals, full words pronounced. We wanted our listeners to feel like they were in the room with us.” She adds, “The words are heavy, but it doesn’t have to feel that way.”

The Indian American twin sisters work synergistically: Atisha is more of the lyricist who pulls from indie folk rock, while Nishita, who’s more into country pop, takes lead on melodies and guitar. Raised in the outskirts of Philly, the pair DIY’d their way into music while visiting their grandmother in Mumbai, recording the wistful “don’t say” on a whim at a cotton mill–turned–recording studio there. Immediately comforting and relatable, it organically amassed nearly 4 million streams on Spotify.

Born in the U.S. to first-generation immigrants, their childhood included many family road trips filled with music from the Beatles, Shania Twain, and James Taylor. Today, their music echoes the manifold melodies of their upbringing.  In 2020, LULLANAS released their debut EP, the nostalgic Before Everything Got Real, produced by Peter Katis (The National, The Paper Kites). Between gigs alongside Maggie Rose, Darlingside, and Wild Rivers, they toured with Peter Bradley Adams and Australian indie folk trio Sons of the East.
