Wonky Electronic Artist Shrimpnose Announces New Album ‘The World Pushed Against You’
July 19, 2024 BY Bailey Vigliaturo
Today, eclectic electronic artist/producer/DJ Shrimpnose announces his new album The World Pushed Against You, his first LP with Nettwerk, out everywhere October 11. The album follows his May 2024 lofi/electronica EP Toward Heaven.
The 12 tracks that comprise The World Pushed Against You range from frenzied jersey club-laden IDM to mellow garage-infused ballads. Stepping away from making more formulaic lofi beats, the album presents Shrimpnose as his most authentic. “I’m just so burnt out on lofi beats,” he divulges. “It’s become the most boring, soulless type of music on the planet.”
Along with the announcement of the record, today, Shrimpnose shares the Daedelus remix of the project’s debut single “Glued2.” The innovative composer brings their unpredictable, discordant strings that build into glitchy oscillating synths to the original track’s bounce. Speaking about working with Daedelus, Shrimpnose says: “I think seeing Daedelus perform [X time ago] probably had the biggest impact on me. Daedelus is so intelligent and their music is so conceptual—that’s something I really appreciate. I feel like the remix turned out so cool because the first couple minutes are very strange and tension-filled. I just love what they did and I’m excited about it.”
The World Pushed Against You is Shrimpnose’s “learning how to dance era.” Dance music lovers will immediately recognize the sample on the melancholic third track, “Miles Between Us,” while still getting a taste of Shrimpnose’s experimental approach to production. Songs like “Suspect” and “Let You Get To Me” push brooding Burial-inspired garage that are filled with dark drums and fuzzy soundscapes, forcing listeners into introspection.
Despite the somewhat sad tones weaved throughout the record, Shrimpnose does instill hope. Midway through, “River Still Runs” boasts chirp-like notes and optimistic chords that beam with brightness. “Pollen” and “Pollinate”—made with one of his best friends Somni—also showcase his versatility. “I’ve just been super into the idea of juxtaposing dance music with an ambient song,” he says. “I’m really into a song with two parts.”
After touring extensively to close out 2023 in support of his last album As It Seems—including a sold-out headline show in Minneapolis, a show with Blu and Bobby Raps at Lodge Room in LA, and several support dates with Gold Panda—Shrimpnose will take the stage at Shambhala, Canada’s largest electronic music festival, on Thursday, July 25. Catch Shrimpnose as one of the first performances of the weekend; 1 p.m. on the AMP Stage.
