Icelandic trio Vök shares one of their most exciting singles yet, the exhilarating and heartfelt “No Coffee at the Funeral,” from their forthcoming EP Feeding on a Tragedy (out October 8 via Nettwerk Records).
The new single “No Coffee at the Funeral” follows recently released singles “Skin” and “Lost in the Weekend,” which gave an early taste of their new material recorded last year in their Reykjavík studios. The singles were the follow-up to their acclaimed 2019 album In the Dark, which was written and recorded by the band in collaboration with producer James Earp (Bipolar Sunshine, Fickle Friends, Lewis Capaldi).
“No Coffee at the Funeral” is a powerful and heartfelt song that showcases Vök at its best. The song shares lead singer Margret’s grief in a unique and uplifting way with an exhilarating and catchy synth-pop sound paired with profound lyrics.
About the song, Margret says: “This song is about grief. I wrote the song after my grandfather died in 2020. My grandfather’s death hit me hard. He had battled cancer for a while, which was tough for my family and me. Due to Covid regulations, we couldn’t even hold a traditional funeral, and a minimal number of people could attend the ceremony, which also rubbed salt to the wound. The funeral was a beautiful ceremony, but we couldn’t offer people any food or drinks. Afterward, I wrote “No Coffee at the Funeral” as an homage to my late grandfather.”
Through their unique and lushly layered sound that blends electro and indie with forward-thinking pop and a self-assured aesthetic, Vök continues to cement their position as one of the most exciting alternative bands right now. Following two critically acclaimed albums, the new music signals an exciting year for Vök, with more to come.
Vök are Margrét Rán (vocals), Einar Stef (bass/guitar) and Bergur (drums).
