Tom Speight’s Newest EP ‘Stay Alive’ is Out Now
October 18, 2024 BY Emma Orland
London’s melodic storyteller Tom Speight is back today with a brand-new EP titled Stay Alive, listen in full HERE.
The EP’s opener and title track “Stay Alive” was produced by Chris Bond (Nick Mulvey, Hollow Coves) and is a poignant, yet rousing song, inspired by reading the book of the same title by Matt Haig, which is about Speight’s struggles with mental health over the years. Off the back of a successful UK and Brazil tour, selling out shows, Speight went back into the studio to work on the new song. Elsewhere on the EP “Somebody Somewhere” is a tender track featuring the vocals of longtime collaborator Lydia Clowes. “I produced it at the legendary Abbey Road Studios,” Speight said. “It’s a song about longing for someone to take you back, inspired by Michael Kiwanuka and Fleetwood Mac. It’s a hypnotic folk ballad.”
“Once” is an evocative folk-pop track that intricately weaves the journey from the exhilarating rush of falling in love to the poignant descent of falling out of it. Drawing inspiration from early Ben Howard, it infuses a refreshing twist of indie sensibility, making it a captivating addition to any playlist. The last brand-new track “Kind to You” is a beautiful piano ballad featuring the Swedish duo The Mayries. Inspired by attending several weddings over the summer, Speight says “I found myself wanting to write the perfect wedding song. It’s incredibly stripped back, focusing on the piano and harmonies.”
Stay Alive EP follows on from his 2023 album Love & Light released on Nettwerk – a powerful exploration of love, loss, and hope, delving deep into his own experiences and emotions. Heavily supported by BBC Radio 2 (impressively, Speight had ten playlisted singles over his career on Radio 2), it was made album of the week with tracks like “Let Go” and “Trick of the Light” being added to the station’s playlist.
Continuing to pay homage to some of Tom’s biggest inspirations, including Damien Rice, Sufjan Stevens, and John Mayer, whilst also exploring fresh territory reminiscent of Dermot Kennedy and Tom Grennan. Singles such as “The One” showcased Tom’s exceptional lyrical talents, drawing comparisons to Tom Odell’s introspective approach, and quickly caught the attention of The Independent’s track of the week, with more praise from the likes of Wonderland, METAL, Headliner, and Music News.
Stay tuned for more new music from Tom Speight very soon.
