Tim Atlas Returns With “Courtside” & Shares Details Of New EP

Today, the LA-based artist, songwriter, and producer, Tim Atlas, is sharing his new single “Courtside” alongside news of a five-track EP, QUOTA that is set for release on July 9, 2021, via Nettwerk Records. The new single comes as the latest example of Atlas’s growing mastery of this style of modern pop, following on the heels of recent collaborations with slenderbodies, honeywhip and Kartell, and previous releases that earned support from Paste Magazine, The Line of Best Fit, Complex, Zane Lowe (Beats 1), KCRW, Clash, Hunger and more. Directed by Jessamine Folk, the accompanying video is Tim’s cutest release to date (seriously, you shouldn’t miss it).
“Courtside” comes wrapped in a slick modern production that weaves its way between pop, R&B, and indie. It allows Atlas a chance to show off his keen and characterful lyricism as it flows, finding him observing someone as they “walk into a room / like you’re burning down the West Coast.” Even as the sound of “Courtside” is confident and irresistible, it still finds Atlas receding into his mind, dreaming up scenarios most recently inspired by taking David Sedaris’ MasterClass on storytelling over lockdown. It acts as another fine example of Atlas’ sound that snakes seamlessly between genre and style, picking at the cerebral arrangements of Tame Impala, the timeless pop of The Gap Band, and the moody contemplation of Men I Trust.
“Throughout the last year, I’ve felt the full spectrum of emotions, feeling balanced in my life then unbalanced, bouncing back and forth,” says Atlas at the end of this historic and tumultuous year. Not letting it disrupt his flow, Atlas has used this continuous tipping between light and dark, optimistic and pessimistic, to fuel the QUOTA EP; it’s a dichotomy hammered home with “Courtside” that marries uncertain psychology with major-chord optimism resulting in a glass-half-full take on apprehension. Speaking about the single, Atlas says: “This song is about love. In sports, it’s so farfetched to get courtside seats and this is about getting someone out of your league. Exuding confidence and being yourself!“
As a multi-faceted creative, Atlas is also a photographer, videographer, and graphic designer. Known for his unique brand of downtempo R&B and Neo-soul akin to the sounds of Toro y Moi, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Rex Orange County, Tim initially made waves with his debut EP, All Talk! From there, he went on to pick up significant support amongst radio tastemakers and press. After amassing over 40 million streams and love from Spotify, Apple Music, and more, Atlas embarked on a global tour marking key shows in London, New York, and Los Angeles, supporting The Magic City Hippies and Gold Room, debuting his first festival appearances at The Great Escape Festival in UK and Noise Pop in San Francisco.
