Theo Kandel’s ‘Somewhere Along The Trail, Vol. 2’ Out June 13; Shares Cover of “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”
May 16, 2025 BY Emma Orland
Today, NYC singer-songwriter Theo Kandel announces his forthcoming project, Somewhere Along the Trail, Vol. 2, a three-song EP releasing June 13 via Nettwerk Music Group.
With Somewhere Along the Trail, Vol. 2, Theo brings it back to the basics with a three-song EP. “Every two years, I aim to put out a triplet of songs – recorded live, just me and my guitar – that I wouldn’t want to produce any other way,” Theo explains. Following the release of Vol. 1 (2023) and his debut album, Eating And Drinking And Being In Love (2024), this release strips everything down to the core and reminds fans that while Theo can explore all the layers of folk music, it’s ultimately all about the songs. He says, “With album #2 in the works already, I wanted to make sure nobody forgets about my sweet fingerpicking and the pureness of a simple song.”
Along with the news of the EP comes a cover of Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” listen here.
Speaking to the recording, Theo says, “I’ve been playing it for many, many years, and every time I’d whip it out, someone would tell me I should release it. So here it is! An incredible, heartbreaking song, written by the one and only Richard Thompson. I’ve put my own little spin on it while trying to maintain the magic of the original (and trying to play it with as much jeuje as Mr. Thompson).”

“1952 Vincent Black Lightning” follows the release of “Stupid Funny Limbo,” the first taste of Vol. 2, released last month. Written in 2022 in the same week as his breakout single “Flight to JFK,” “Stupid Funny Limbo” delves into the complexities of long-distance love, and explores the trepidation and uncertainty that come with it.
Today’s release is also accompanied by the announcement of headline tour dates across the US with support from Katie Lynne Sharbaugh, including stops in Nashville, Charlotte, Carrboro, Decatur, DC, Philadelphia, Cambridge, Night Club 101 in New York City, and a special show across the pond this July at The Forge in London. About Theo Kandel:
Kandel initially picked up the violin at four years old. He later found his voice through experimentation with different musical genres, blending indie, pop, and electronic music elements while preserving the folk roots evident in his current work. Following a string of “test releases,” he made his mark in 2021 with his debut EP, Spin Cycle, earning praise from publications like FLAUNT and Ones To Watch.
Theo continued to evolve his sound, culminating in his 2022 EP, What if it all works out in the end?, featuring standout tracks like “Me & All My Friends Have Got the Blues,” reminiscent of folk legends such as Jackson C. Frank and James Taylor. His journey led him to sign with Nettwerk following the release of his stripped-down EP, Somewhere Along the Trail, Vol. 1, with its lead single, “Flight to JFK,” amassing over 600k streams to date. Alongside headlining his shows, he supported acts like Evan Honer, ROSIE, Max McNown, The Script, and the iconic John Oates.
