The Harmaleighs Announce ‘Barely Making Sense’ EP + Share Reimagined Cover Of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”

May 8, 2020 BY Nettwerk

“Barely Making Sense is our stripped-down accompaniment to She Won’t Make Sense. We want the listener to enjoy these songs in their purest form. Who knew it would come in a time when the world is barely making sense? So grab a cold beer, put the record on, and sip, listen, relax, repeat.” – The Harmaleighs

Nashville indie duo The Harmaleighs—Haley Grant and Kaylee Jasperson—will release a stripped back EP called Barely Making Sense on June 12, featuring three stripped-back tracks from their sophomore album She Won’t Make Sense along with a re-imagined cover Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” (available to stream today), all of which put the duo’s gorgeous harmonies front and center.

On why they chose to cover Lauper’s pop anthem, the band says, “When Cyndi Lauper recorded “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” she changed some of the lyrics because they weren’t female empowering. It then became her biggest hit and a dance bop for all of time. We think that Cyndi Lauper is a badass queen and wanted to pay homage to how she stuck it to the man. It’s simple, girls just wanna have fun.”

The Harmaleighs released their sophomore album She Won’t Make Sense last year to critical acclaim.  Produced by Dan Molad (Lucius, JD McPherson, Tweedy), She Won’t Make Sense is a concept album about mental illness, specifically Haley’s deeply personal journey through anxiety, depression and mania. Musically, it’s a stark contrast from their previous releases, having evolved from their acoustic beginnings to a fuller sound involving synths, strings and drums to convey the emotional weight of the album’s subject matter. For all the unease the album transmits, a sense of resilience shines through, even in the most vulnerable of moments.

The duo, like so many others, had big plans to spend 2020 on the road with previously announced headline shows and various support slots, including dates with Lilly Hiatt and Wild Rivers.  Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many of these dates have been rescheduled for August (pending venues re-opening safely).  Visit The Harmaleighs website for the more up to date information.
