THE ALBUM LEAF Shares New Experimental Ambient EP ‘Blast’; Listen Now

July 15, 2024 BY Bailey Vigliaturo

Prolific Los Angeles-based electronic artist The Album Leaf has had a fruitful few years. He released his acclaimed 2023 full-length album, Future Falling, a series of remixes by esteemed artists like Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Balmorhea, written several scores, including one for the film Things Will Be Different, which premiered at SXSW earlier this year, and today is sharing his new EP, Blastfeaturing sax player Aaron D4VD (Anderson Paak., Tyler The Creator, Herbie Hancock). First conceived as an improvisational experimentation, The Album Leaf later reworked the sequences, adding saxophone for the first time, fine-tuning the six tracks into a seamless listening experience. The immersive ambient EP takes the listener on an atmospheric journey into the mind of visionary Jimmy LaValle.

Jimmy explains, “The creation of the Blast EP began as an experiment in chance. I assembled a collection of different MIDI sequences and routed them to various hardware synthesizers and drum machines in my studio, specifically the Novation Peak, Summit, Bass Station, Moog Minitaur, DFAM and Mother 32, Vermona DRM1 MKIII, Elektron Digitakt, and Arturia MiniBrute. These were routed through FX pedals like the Eventide H9, OTO BAM, BIM, and BOUM, as well as the Vongon Polyphrase and Ultrasheer. I triggered these different clips and had a synth open, allowing me to respond and play melodies and bass lines that matched the presented chord progressions, moods, and ambiances. This process was performed live as a loose improvisation on an internet radio app called Blast. Blast is a platform for a community of artists and DJs to stream their performances live, which are then available for 24 hours before disappearing.”

Adding, “The initial performance was recorded, and I found a kindred spirit in Aaron Shaw (Aaron D4VD), a remarkable saxophonist. He embellished the 30-minute journey with additional melodies, adding layers of soul and emotion to the overall piece. This is also the first time I have used Saxophone on an Album Leaf recording.”
