So-Cal Producer Ian Ewing Announces ‘Where I’ll Be’ Vocal Lofi EP
May 12, 2023 BY Jason Currell
Today, lofi/RnB/electronica producer Ian Ewing announces his next EP entitled Where I’ll Be, set for release on June 30 via Nettwerk. The self-taught instrumentalist grew up in Wisconsin but currently resides in Laguna Niguel, California. He really enjoys hummus.
Where I’ll Be shows the value of collaboration; Ian features five different artists in the four-track EP. These collaborators span countries and continents, ranging from Boston rapper Latrell James to Canadian RnB singer John Concepcion to Finnish instrumentalist cocabona.
“This EP,” shares Ewing, “slightly breaks out of my downtempo, instrumental conventions. It’s a very collaborative and dynamic project to me; it’s the byproduct of transcontinental, remote collaborations. I admire each one of these collaborators and their unique art and style, and this project was about retaining their essence, all in a production style that I hope listeners can come to expect from me: atmospheric and lush with carefully curated sounds and a really loud kick drum. Special thanks to Paul George and Travis George for helping connect me with many of these vocalists!”
Also today, Ewing shares the second single from Where I’ll Be, entitled “Leave.” Toronto-based singer/songwriter/freestyler Olive B provides her own soulful energy to this lively single. Live bass from Finnish artist and Ewing’s longtime collaborator cocabona further enhances this smooth banger.
“I took inspiration,” shares Ewing, “from my all-time favorites, J Dilla and Pete Rock, aiming for a beat that could be listened to on end, yet still had plenty of room for someone to write on top. Olive B wrote perfectly on top, delivering, with a most smooth and effortless flow, a story about choosing yourself.”
Lauded as a “boy genius” by prominent instrumental outlet Stereofox, Ian Ewing’s talent extends far beyond making beats. In addition to amassing millions of streams on his solo catalog, he’s drummed on songs for Mick Jenkins, Galimatias, and Cautious Clay, and his sounds have been sampled by the likes of Loyle Carner and Tek of Smif N Wessun.
