singer-songwriter dacelynn releases debut EP ‘nine lives’
December 12, 2025 BY Emma Orland
Today, LA singer-songwriter dacelynn shares her debut EP nine lives. Comprised of songs from the last two years, nine lives documents her transformation – each track a snapshot of a distinct version of herself as she navigates love, loss, self-discovery, and, ultimately, growth. Written over a series of writing sessions in Los Angeles with collaborators such as Devon Again, Sophie Truax, runnner, and more, nine lives is underscored by dacelynn’s personal and creative transformation, serving as a time capsule of her evolution.

“It made sense for me to call this project ‘nine lives’ because it feels like I’ve lived nine lives since I started working on it,” she says. “My music taste has changed, and my sound is ever-evolving. Each of these songs comes from such a distinct point in my life, and it feels like these versions of myself. Each year that I grow up, I’m a completely different person.”
dacelynn shared the first taste of nine lives with indie-pop track “rip you open,” released last year, followed by “russian doll,” which was initially written as a poem and later set to melody on her acoustic guitar. Grappling with themes of identity and compartmentalization, the “russian doll” demo took off immediately, assuming a life of its own ahead of its official release, and has since been covered hundreds of times on the platform, amassing over half a million streams. She later shared the warm and intimate “dog eat dog,” the indie-twanged confessional “moat,” and, most recently, the twinkly “porcelain” about the growing pains of long-lasting friendships.
Today’s release of nine lives welcomes previously unheard tracks, the whimsical “fishing with you,” “monsoon,” which captures the feeling of falling in love over distorted guitar lines, and the vivid “it’s over (it’s over).”
“My best friend and I went to the lake,” she recalls. “On the way back home, she hit a deer, and it felt like a head-on collision. I had to be strong for her in the moment, but I started to spiral after I got home. I was ruminating on the fact we could’ve died. The song pokes fun at this bizarre situation. Even though it wasn’t rational, it all felt real.”
It’s candid moments like this that enable dacelynn to make an impact with her music.
“When you listen to me, I hope you feel seen in some way,” she concludes. “If you open up to your community, you realize that so many people have been in the same spot as you. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, you realize you aren’t alone in the way that you’re feeling. I’m reminded time and time again, I hope you see that too.”
