Rosie H Sullivan introduces the uplifting single ‘Expectations’

January 13, 2023 BY Jason Currell

Talented singer-songwriter Rosie H Sullivan, steadily making a name for herself on the Scottish music scene, has announced her latest single, ‘Expectations’. Listen here: https://rosiehsullivan.ffm.to/expectations

Out today and taken from her highly anticipated debut EP out next month, the uplifting track tells the story of Rosie being at one with nature and feeling most at peace in rural surroundings. It beautifully showcases her wholesome voice and indisputable musical talent, as well as the warm sincerity of her lyrics.

Having started writing and creating songs in her early teenage years, Rosie has always based her music around her own life and those close to her, taking inspiration from her environment. This openness and honesty adds a relatable quality to her work that is drawing more and more listeners in.

Throughout Expectations, Rosie expresses a feeling that her mind is cured when she returns to the place she calls home. Immersed in the stillness and tranquillity of the Banchory countryside, where her parents now live, she can forget about all of the “noise and situations” which take up so much of her time elsewhere.

The young vocalist is set to take her material on the road and will grace stages in Stornoway, Dundee and Inverness, as well as performing a headline show at Glasgow’s King Tut’s, in the coming weeks. Watch the video accompanying the single here and below:

Rosie H Sillvan said: “I wrote this song last year when I was visiting my parents over the Christmas holidays, a few days before heading back to Edinburgh. I was gearing up to go back to the fast paced city life, which I do love, but I was taking some time to be mindful of my rural surroundings. It’s a track that really showcases my appreciation for nature. Having grown up on the Isle of Lewis, which is so quiet and beautiful, I feel most at home in the wilderness.”

Slightly more fast paced than what listeners have perhaps come to expect from Rosie, Expectations’ upbeat chorus reflects the contentment and happiness Rosie feels when in the Scottish countryside, where there are no commitments or “useless expectations”.

Rosie added: “We had a lot of fun recording this track. My favourite moment was when I did the harmony on “be back” in the chorus and my manager and producer both looked up at me and beamed. I love those times in the studio when you do something and automatically all look at each other and nod because you know you’ve made something special. It’s always a nice reminder as to why I do what I do.

“Recording this EP has been an incredible experience, but I think playing it live will be even more special. I can’t wait to get on the road and connect with audiences across the country, playing my music and sharing my stories from home and beyond.”

With a similar ethereal musical style to the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Laura Marling and Elliott Smith, Rosie’s work is proving to be popular among listeners and critics alike. One of her previous singles So I’ve Been Told was named Single of the Week on BBC Radio Scotland’s Afternoon Show and made it onto Spotify UK’s New Music Friday playlist, as did her most recent single Lights.

Now signed to Nettwerk, Expectations is the fourth in a string of new material from Rosie’s debut EP, set for release in early February, which she will tour from this month.
