Riley Pearce Shares “8 Hour Drive”

An introspective singer-songwriter, Australian indie-folk artist Riley Pearce often writes about coping with change and his love-hate relationship with nostalgia. Out today, Rileyreturns with “8 Hour Drive,” another example of his reflective, heart-on-sleeve songwriting that continues to resonate both in Australia and abroad.

“8 Hour Drive” is the first new music since the 5-track EP Love and All That Stuff (2021) that was described by Atwood Magazine as “a buoyant encapsulation of intimacy & connection.” With lyrics like, “my hindsight eyes, a million cars out on the track, a million racing lights…they’re all talking to me now,” the new track also reflects the all too human need for connection.

Late-2019, Riley went on the road with a friend and labelmate Garrett Kato. For six weeks, the two traveled throughout Europe and the UK, performing across 20+ cities along the way. At the time, Riley had mixed emotions about the trip. About the song, Riley says: “the shows were a mixed bag of being amazing and truly inspiring and leaving us questioning why we played in that town. I was writing postcards back home to my fiancé and trying to ‘take her with me as much as I could. Looking back on it now in a post-pandemic world and it really has changed how I view that trip. It was such an amazing opportunity that I didn’t fully appreciate at the time now that I’m missing travel and shows. It’s so incredible driving in Europe and all the different cultures you witness.”
