Queer dance trio CAPYAC share their new song + video “U Know Y”
April 4, 2025 BY Emma Orland
After releasing a highly acclaimed collaborative EP with musician-comedian Reggie Watts – Songs From A Celestial City – the LA-via-Austin queer dance/electronic trio CAPYAC shows no signs of slowing down. They keep the party going with their new song “U Know Y.” It will truly get you in that euphoric state of mind with an epic build stemming from the lyrical loop, groovy bassline, and house beat. Band members Delwin, Eric, and Obie wrote the song to ease the pain of the daily doldrums through Detroit and French-inspired electronic music.
The band elaborated: “When the first lung-bearing fish grew legs and crawled up on that barren igneous surface 375 million years ago, surely it felt in its toes (at that time, a sort of fin-like proto-toe) how the lichen growing on the rough and porous lava rock softened its step. Used to the sweet enveloping cushion of the sea, the fish must have felt an incredible amount of pain stepping onto rock. Everyone is saying that today’s society is just an echo of the Devonian period, and they’re not wrong. We are all Tiktaalik, living in a hostile world we are barely adapted for, grateful for every patch of wet moss we can find. Anyways, this song is about that.”
After kicking off their 2025 tour dates at Treefort Music Festival, CAPYAC is currently on tour supporting Rubblebucket throughout North America before playing two headline shows at Elsewhere in Brooklyn and Chop Shop in Chicago. Known for their energetic live show and penchant for improvisation, they’ll be enthralling audiences around the country with songs old and new. ABOUT CAPYAC:
CAPYAC is the surrealist dance band that fuses French house, Detroit electronic, jazz, funk, and several other modern genres. Originating from Austin, TX, the founding duo of Delwin Campbell and Eric Peana migrate regularly to Berlin, connecting with a slew of collaborators along the way, from guest vocalists to horn sections to dance troupes.
They burst onto the scene with Movement Swallows Us (2015), which included breakout single “Speedracer,” the duo’s music has since connected with audiences worldwide. With follow up albums, Headlunge (2016), Who Is Donny Flamingo? (2018), and CAPYAC FOREVER (2021), they’ve accumulated over 20+ million streams on Spotify, 3.6+ million streams on Soundcloud and 2+ million streams on Apple Music. With co-signs from SPIN, The FADER, Wonderland, High Snobiety, KCRW, and more, their music spans genres while appealing to purists and everyday listeners alike. Extending their reach even further, CAPYAC’s music has secured licensing placements with Netflix, FOX, Freeform, Volcom, Playstation VR, and more.
In 2024, CAPYAC added Obie Puckett into the fold and released their collaborative EP with musician-comedian Reggie Watts titled Songs From a Celestial City. As its title suggests, it’s an expansive EP of iridescent, high-energy, soulful house tracks blending CAPYAC’s idiosyncratic, genre-bending production with buttery smooth, soulful vocals from Watts. The release encapsulates the entire ethos of both artists perfectly; wanting to build genuine communities whilst radiating vitality, absurdism, and love. Having struck up an instant friendship after a chance meeting in 2023, and immediately bonding over a deep adoration and fascination of dance music and comedy, they decided to embark on a series of extended and largely improvised jam sessions, which would eventually form the groundwork for this new project.
