Old Sea Brigade Shares New Song “How It Works”

Atlanta-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Old Sea Brigade (Ben Cramer) shares new song “How It Works,” the first track from his forthcoming album (details tba) and follow up to his acclaimed EP collaboration with fellow artist and friend Luke Sital-Singh, All The Ways You Sing In The Dark. The meditative, indie rock track was inspired from a snarky industry encounter and is about observing and accepting change around you.

Cramer explains, “I think in the music industry, there’s sometimes this false narrative that there are certain ‘gatekeepers’ that dictate artists careers. It can be a fairly toxic notion, especially when you’re trying to get your foot in the door as a young artist. I got an email once from some music industry person telling me, ‘that’s how it works.’ That email, particularly the line, sparked the idea for the song. I wrote the song with my close friend and frequent collaborator, Henry Brill. It was one of the last songs I wrote for the record and in some ways felt like the missing piece.”

Of the accompanying music video, he says, “For me, the video displays the struggle with one’s inner critic. We filmed out in the Mojave Desert with director Evan Brace and his fantastic crew. It was nice to put full trust into someone and watch their work and vision exceed any of my expectations. It also took a lot of trust to get me to dress up in a cowboy outfit.”

Old Sea Brigade and Luke Sital-Singh’s EP collaboration, All The Ways You Sing In The Dark, is comprised of four songs that carry the spirit of their surroundings. Nodding to the Laurel Canyon renaissance of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Ben and Luke garnered inspiration from cruising around Silver Lake and Hollywood. They wrote most of the EP at Luke’s place last summer in just seven days, finishing the recordings alongside Ben’s production partner Owen Lewis in Nashville at Shoebox Studios in December 2019.  As the world went into quarantine and their solo careers were put on hold, Old Sea Brigade & Luke Sital-Singh found a rare window on their schedules to release All The Ways You Sing in the Dark. For as fast as everything came together, this union has all the makings of an enduring partnership.

Now, Old Sea Brigade is putting the finishing touches on his next full-length album, due out in 2021. More details to follow.
