Neil Frances is excited to share their collaboration with DUBLAB and Quarantine Gallery for The Music Center’s new digital series called For the Love of L.A., designed to celebrate the creativity of Los Angeles and support L.A.-based artists representing the disciplines of music, visual art, dance and more. The composition is one of three new commissioned performative pieces for the series that reflect on the City of Angels, and the times we are only just beginning to understand.

Dream, is a voyage across various corners and cultural epochs of Los Angeles. Directed by Emmanuelle Pickett & Harrison Schaaf, with original music by Neil Frances, this piece takes us on a journey high above the city’s skyscrapers and down through its streets and under passes. An uncanny combination of melancholic and romantic gestures permeate our senses enhanced by 8D sound as we see pre- and post-pandemic images splash across the screen. We are reminded of how Dodger Stadium once heaved with fans, we see the Compton Cowboys parading through the streets, the lonely stoicism of the Bonaventure Hotel and we are swept along with lovers and street vendors, protestors and the homeless. The powerful ebb and flow of Neil Frances’ music pulses through every image and seems to give the city a new, reaffirming heartbeat.
In addition to Neil Frances, the other two works are collaborations by San Cha & Maria Maea and AKUA & Daniel T. Gaitor-Lomack. All three visual art pieces were conceptualized and composed in the beginning of June from each artists’ own place of quarantine. The work was created in the direct wake of the uprising that swelled across the country in reaction to the widespread videos of the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery during a time of unprecedented racial and political upheaval, as well as unimagined isolation, uncertainty and discord.
Last week, Neil Frances released their new, dreamy, day-time disco-infused track “Tuesday” along with a carefree video inspired by a dog’s view of the upside to the monotony of our new lives in quarantine.
