Today, Nashville singer-songwriter-producer Mokita (aka John-Luke Carter) arrives with a “bucket list” collaboration alongside one of his musical heroes, Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional, for their introspective new single, “It Was Real To Me.”
Out now via Nettwerk, “It Was Real To Me (feat. Dashboard Confessional)” unites the signature sounds of both artists. Mokita’s serene, heartfelt delivery blends seamlessly with Carrabba’s passionate vocals and the unmistakable acoustic guitars synonymous with the emo icon. The song’s narrative pays respect to a dear friend, who’s photography served as an integral part of the early days of Dashboard Confessional’s trajectory.
For Mokita, a lifelong Dashboard Confessional fan, “It Was Real To Me” marks a career highlight. “This song is a dream collaboration for me,” he shares. “Growing up listening to Chris, working with him was an awesome moment. We had the initial vibe for the song quickly, and the production is super organic – several layered guitars to create a full acoustic track. Chris was so easy to work with and is an amazing storyteller. I’m so honored to be able to sing with one of my musical heroes.”
Carrabba reflects on the inspiration behind the song: “When Mokita and I started messing around with some melodies my thoughts begin to center on a friend who was a talented photographer and who was an important presence in the social group I came up in. Because this friend was always the one taking the photo there are very few images of her in the pictures from our years as young adults beginning to find our way in this world. This is a thank you for making a record of our history together.”
“It Was Real To Me” promises to be a powerful and nostalgic anthem for fans of both Mokita and Dashboard Confessional. Next up for Dashboard Confessional is Ontario’s All Your Friends Festival on August 24th followed by a 28-city US headline tour, with support from BOYS LIKE GIRLS and Taylor Acorn, beginning on September 10th at Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ, making stops across the U.S. in New York, Los Angeles, Houston and more before wrapping up in Irving, TX at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory on October 27.
