Melodic Storyteller Tom Speight Shares New Track “Stay Alive”, Out Today
May 24, 2024 BY Emma Orland
London’s melodic storyteller Tom Speight is back with a poignant, yet rousing brand new track titled “Stay Alive”, inspired by reading the book of the same title by Matt Haig, which is about Speight’s struggles with mental health over the years. Off the back of a successful UK and Brazil tour, selling out shows, Speight went back into the studio to work on the new song. Listen here and below.
Produced by Chris Bond (Ben Howard, Nick Mulvey, Hollow Coves) and featuring backing vocals by Turin Brakes, Speight explained “I had just come out of the hospital with Crohn’s Disease after a lengthy stay of 2 months, and I felt like I was ready to fall in love with being alive again and not take life for granted. We had just played at Glastonbury, and I knew I wanted a song in my set that people could dance to. As a result, “Stay Alive” was born.”

“Stay Alive” follows on from his 2023 album Love & Light released on Nettwerk – a powerful exploration of love, loss, and hope, delving deep into his own experiences and emotions. Heavily supported by BBC Radio 2 (impressively, Speight had ten playlisted singles over his career on Radio 2), it was made album of the week with tracks like “Let Go” and “Trick of the Light” being added to the station’s playlist.
Continuing to pay homage to some of Tom’s biggest inspirations, including Damien Rice, Sufjan Stevens, and John Mayer, whilst also exploring fresh territory reminiscent of Dermot Kennedy and Tom Grennan. Singles such as “The One” showcased Tom’s exceptional lyrical talents, drawing comparisons to Tom Odell’s introspective approach, and quickly caught the attention of The Independent’s track of the week, with more praise from the likes of Wonderland, METAL, Headliner, and Music News.
