Libera-nominated New York-Based Neo-Classical Pianist Doeke Shares the Imaginative “Bergen (Mountains)”

April 28, 2023 BY Jason Currell

Today, Doeke (Jorn Swart), returns with his new single “Bergen (Mountains).” The New York-based poignant neo-classical pianist delivers his latest single as an ode to the ancient towers of earth. Swart uses soft piano melodies to capture the experience of feeling small among the mountains but then employs a growing tension to express his excitement about the enormity and majesty of their presence. Jorn shares, “The piano piece builds slowly, its rising minor chords increasing in enthusiasm but never quite getting to a resolution — much like climbing a mountain and feeling like the peak remains out of reach.”

Bergen (Mountains)” is the first single since the release of his lush and nostalgic 2022 album, Herinner. Along with the announcement of his new single, his 2022 EP Memorie was nominated for a Libera Award for “Best Classical Record.” This track is just the beginning of what’s to come for Doeke in this new chapter.

ABOUT DOEKE:

Doeke (Doo-kuh) is the cinematic piano project of pianist and composer Jorn Swart, known for his refined playing and emotive compositions. Doeke’s music is shaped by a desire to return to simplicity. It’s about nostalgia, it’s about home, it’s about the strange details we tend to remember from childhood. All the song titles are in Dutch, and many of the compositions are inspired by Jorn’s memories from the Netherlands. With Doeke, he leans into this quality — Doeke’s music has the narrative and emotional attributes of a film score.
