Leisure returns with new single “Summer Season” feat. Muroki

October 7, 2022 BY Jason Currell

The genre-defying New Zealand outfit LEISURE have returned with a new single titled “Summer Season” to wash away those autumn blues. Out on Nettwerk today, the new track features the classiest sun-kissed lines and seductive bassline and continues the band’s Midas touch of blending electro-funk pop, and soul.

The irresistible vocals are provided by Muroki, the rising Kenyan-New Zealand reggae musician from Raglan who is signed to Benee’s own imprint label Olive Records.

Forming in 2015 during a spontaneous trip up to New Zealand’s west coast, the five-piece collective LEISURE’s unique brand of electro-funk and shoegaze has charmed fans around the world. Their catalog has amassed well over 300 million combined streams, and they’ve gained a loyal live following, selling out shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, including a debut double performance at UK’s The Great Escape Festival. The band has received praise from fans and tastemakers alike, both at radio (KCRW- LA, WFMU-NYC, WFUV-NYC, BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra) and press (NPR Music, NME, i-D, Complex, Line of Best Fit, Pigeons & Planes, NYLON, Wonderland, High Snobiety, Okayplayer, CLASH, Ladygunn, Coup De Main).

With a string of super chilled bangers under his belt including the platinum hit Wavy, Muroki is delivering on the promise that saw his self-released debut picked up by Benee and played by Elton John on his Rocket Hour radio show back in 2020. Blending his Kenyan and Coromandel roots into a brew that feels distinctly mixed in Raglan, the hometown he mostly strongly identifies his music with — its sunbaked, sleepy seaside intimacy and pounding surf a defining backdrop to this 20-year-old’s sound. Multifaceted silky and rhythmic grooves have strong ties to his surfing background, adding in sounds from South America to Africa and back to the west coast of Aotearoa.
