LA Indie Artist meija Taps Viral Artist Harmless for Remake of “Buttons”; Has 7-Year-Old Direct Official Video
July 28, 2023 BY Jason Currell
Los Angeles artist and producer meija is excited to share a new version of his popular single, “Buttons,” with featured vocals from Eastside LA neighbor Harmless. Inspired by the creative process he explored while writing and recording his latest effort Do Ya?, Sierota revisits his indie anthem with a refreshed perspective, adding complex textures and a playful rhythm. He explains, “Buttons was the second song that I put out for this project. meija was such a new idea at that point. I’ve learned a lot as a solo artist and a producer since I started this project, and I’ve gotten much more into analog and live recording. I had this idea that it could be a fun experiment to see how I would tackle this song now, four years later, more in the style of Do Ya?. It was really fun to bring in all the musicians I used on that record on this new version. I thought it would be great if I also brought in another vocal on it. I connected with Harmless and discussed the idea with him. He recorded some background vocals that I think really add a nice additional touch.”
For the music video, he decided to take a chance on an up-and-coming new young director, so young, they are not even ten years old. The buzzy talent is Sierota’s seven-year-old son Django, who, once given the reigns to create, pulled off a fun, off-kilter, colorful video that even much older and seasoned directors will be in awe of. When asked about making the clip, Django explains, “I kinda already did the video, so I don’t think I need to do that?”

His 2023 debut album, Do Ya?, is a clever, hazy, indie-rock journey into the mind of thirty-year-old musical prodigy Jamie Sierota. Having launched his career at age 15 in the hit pop band Echosmith, Sierota had to start over again in his early twenties when he stepped away from the sibling band to get married and start his own family in Los Angeles. He then spent the better part of the last decade establishing himself as a writer and producer, eventually working with artists like Adam Lambert, Aly & AJ, JAWNY, and Quinn XCII. Do Ya? was recorded after being inspired by The Beatles’ documentary and digging into his vinyl collection. He decided he wanted to relearn how to write and record in a completely analog fashion and, for the first time in his career, was able to make exactly the record that he wanted to make without any exterior influences. He has gained him a loyal fan following with over 20 million streams worldwide and praise from outlets like Flood, Earmilk, Complex, Ladygunn, KCRW, and more.
meija will headline Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles on August 10th. Tickets are on-sale now.
