LA Artist/Producer/Violinist Bad Snacks Returns With “howling”

April 25, 2025 BY Bailey Vigliaturo

After spending the past year sharing her first vocal EP, playing major festivals such as North Coast, Same Same But Different and Rifflandia, and even starting a podcast, LA-based artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist and educator Bad Snacks is back with more music. Today, she shares her new single “howling” via Nettwerk, a dark, eclectic instrumental that she dubs a “séance type beat.”

“howling” has been a work in progress for nearly a decade, originating in 2016 as a demo made on an ancient version of Logic 9, which she shelved for a while, then re-discovered years later after logging into the wrong SoundCloud account. Listening back, she found it to be a strong starting place for the track listeners hear today:

“I like to think that even when I didn’t know how to record and produce, the ideas I made during that learning period were worth seeing through,” she shares. “I ended up re-downloading [the demo], re-pitching it, and using it as the backbone of a whole séance-type beat that relies heavily on somewhat unfiltered saturation and a large sonic drop – going for more of a “feel” than an actual note at one point.

“It feels nice to have been able to capture the vibe I was going for in 2016, but nearly a decade later,” she leaves off.

After showing a new side of her artistry last April with vocal EP Home Music, Bad Snacks channels her instrumental roots on this midnight dance floor ritual, complete with bumping percussion, ghostly vocal chops, and a violin solo that cuts through like moonlight on forest leaves. “howling” calls back to her first releases (instrumental beat tapes in a similar style to J Dilla, KAYTRANADA and TOKiMONSTA) and her first artistic breakthrough (going viral on Andrew Huang’s “4 Producers” sample-flip challenge), This time however, she returns to an instrumental focus with a bevy of new accomplishments under her belt. Over the years, Bad Snacks has received support from Billboard, DJ Mag, NYLON MagBrainfeeder’s “The Hit,” KCRWNTS RadioDublab, and Kitsuné Musique and played renowned stages such as Red Rocks Amphitheater (Morrison, CO), El Rey (Los Angeles, CA), and The Ogden Theatre (Denver, CO) and opened for artists like LP Giobbi, Anomalie and Tycho.
