Joshua Hyslop Announces New Album; Shares “Gentle Heart”

April 10, 2020 BY Nettwerk

Canadian singer-songwriter Joshua Hyslop is excited to announce his forthcoming album Ash & Stone, out this fall via Nettwerk Records. The record is his fourth offering and is by far the most personal. Joshua explains, “On previous records, I spent a lot of time writing from a place of empathy for other people’s issues. Instead, ‘Ash & Stone’ was naturally my story. I wrote about my own mental health, doubt, relationships and, ultimately, hope. I reached a heightened level of vulnerability. When I showed these songs to anyone else, I’d have tears in my eyes while playing them, which had never happened to me before.” Recorded at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, BC with producer and frequent collaborator, John Raham he also expanded the sonic palette, weaving in synths, horns, and pedal steel.

Premiering earlier this week on American Songwriter, the album features new single “Gentle Heart,” a song written for a friend going through a rough time. “This song is about persisting in the face of difficulties even when they seem insurmountable,” says Josh. “I had no idea we would be facing a global pandemic before it was released.”

In many ways, Hyslop has been working towards baring his soul on Ash & Stone. He developed an unwavering and direct connection to listeners via hundreds of “House Shows” (cozy gigs at the homes of fans) in addition to high-profile tours across North America and Europe. At the same time, he remained prolific on three full-length albums—Where The Mountain Meets the Valley [2012], In Deepest Blue [2015], and Echos [2018]—and gathered over 200 million worldwide streams by 2020. Along the way, he garnered acclaim from the likes of American Songwriter, Earmilk, NPR, Exclaim!, and many more.

Stay tuned for more updates on Joshua Hyslop in the coming weeks.
