The Australian-based singer, producer, songwriter, and multimedia artist Jaguar Jonze (real name Deena Lynch) has dropped the video for the new single “CUT” (out today via Nettwerk Records). “CUT” is the first piece of new music since her “unflinching [NME]” single, “WHO DIED AND MADE YOU KING?” and it’s powerful redux with Zimbabwean-American activist and artist Shugundzo.

The “colossally powerful [CLOUT]” songwriter continues to deliver defiant ferocity through smoky vocals on the forceful new track. “‘CUT’ is the anger behind realizing that people you trusted professionally have been gaslighting you and manipulating your reality – constantly taking from you in a one-way transaction,” says Jaguar Jonze. “Once I realized what was happening, it was a long journey of breaking free from those environments and, more importantly, understanding that what happened had nothing to do with me. It spawned from their deep insecurity and greediness. I was then able to deprogram myself – I wanted nothing but to CUT, get out, and take back control.”

As a prolific and hands-on creative, Jaguar Jonze was also at the helm of the official music video – directing, editing, and producing everything herself. “I wanted a physical interpretation of the meaning behind my song CUT in the music video that was riding the fine line between shocking, engaging, maniacal, determined, comedic, and angry. I only had two weeks to put the concept together, shoot it and edit it. I’m so proud of what was created in that pressure-cooker environment,” says Jaguar Jonze. Adding, “focusing on my artistry again has seen me direct, produce, and edit all my music videos. I love learning this new medium to express my emotions and tell stories. In CUT, I wanted people to feel the desperation and determination to CUT themselves off from toxic, manipulative, gaslighting relationships in any environment once you’ve realized what has been happening to you. What better way to say that than putting an angle grinder to your private bits to “cut” yourself out of there?”

For the last 18 months, Jaguar Jonze has become a public vessel for change and accountability in Australia’s burgeoning #MeToo movement. She’s won the AIR Award for “Outstanding Achievement” and the Triple J “Done Good” Award in honor of her work in calling out unacceptable behavior and raising awareness. Jaguar Jonze is also included in Vogue Australia’s issue of “21 Most Inspiring Women of 2021.” Jaguar Jonze was the only artist-musician invited to the ARIA, APRA AMCOS, and PPCA meeting to address the industry’s widespread sexual assault/harassment issues. She’s also been the guest speaker at the On My Mind Mental Health and Wellbeing workshop and Head First, a music industry conference about mental health and well-being. Jaguar Jonze continues her advocacy work as part of the Temporary Working Group. As best described in Jaguar Jonze’s words, “the heat that is picking up and fanning those tiny fires into a blaze of reckoning” (Billboard).
