Irish singer & multi-instrumentalist Anna Mieke shares new single “Twin”

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Anna Mieke, whose anachronistic vocal talent toes the line between alt-folk and vivid dreamscapes. The Wicklow based musician has shared her new single titled ‘Twin’, her first new music in nearly two years. The track features Rozi Plain (This Is The Kit) on bass, Matthew Jacobson (ReDiViDeR) on percussion, Ryan Hargadon (Kojaque, Rachael Lavelle) on synths & piano, and Cora Venus Lunny on strings. Recorded in the middle of a pandemic, Anna pours all her emotions in her intricate guitarwork and spellbinding voice.

“The song for me, brings me back to the intensity of my early twenties, new people, relationships, places, and also the craving to be constantly moving, to be somewhere different… a perpetual unsettledness,” Anna explained. “The song touches on memory vs reality, and the romanticisation of certain memories. We have a tendency to over-analyse and over-describe moments too, which can take away from the actual time/event/experience we’re wanting to remember.”

The song influenced a visual idea Anna had which she collaborated with filmmaker V Haddad, who’s previously worked with the likes of Big Thief, Hand Habits, and Katie Von Schleicher.

“Anna Mieke and I collaborated on the video for “Twin” and wanted to create a sort of portrait of remembering, Haddad says. “We visualized what might be the lens we use to look back and highlighted the imperfect conversation that happens between our past and present selves – with warmth and understanding. It is a montage of mental life and memory.”

The lyrically ornate and instrumental delicacy of Anna Mieke’s work is tempered with explorations into the avant-garde, contributing a challenging, emphatic and new voice to folk. Divining inspiration from trips through Europe by bike, learning Maori songs as a child in New Zealand and learning traditional songs in Bulgaria, she has amassed skills as a guitarist, bouzouki player, pianist, cellist and preeminently, a vocalist.

She has shared the stage with artists such as Lisa Hannigan, Sarah Neufeld, This Is The Kit, Lankum, Gyda Valtysdottir (múm), and Rozi Plain. Anna Mieke was nominated for the RTÉ Folk Award ‘Best Emerging Act’ in 2019 following her debut album Idle Mind, which she self-released, winning critical praise in her homeland from The Irish Times, Hot Press, RTÉ, and more.

Anna Mieke is currently putting the finishing touches to her second album, due for release later this year on Nettwerk, her first for the label.

She joins Nettwerk’s expanding indie folk roster that includes Brooke Annibale, Allman Brown, and Luke Sital-Singh.
