Introducing: Miki Ratsula (they/them) – Shares Intimate Portrait Of Themself With Lead Single “second”
June 4, 2021 BY Nettwerk
“I knew I wanted the video to represent queer bodies and relationships in the most authentic way. Before getting my top surgery, I really wish I had seen more representation of what queer bodies can look like, and that they can be loved.”
Southern California-based, Finnish American singer & songwriter Miki Ratsula has signed to Nettwerk Records, and tomorrow (June 4) releases the raw and deeply personal lead single “second” from their upcoming debut full-length, details forthcoming. The nonbinary artist has built a sizable audience by openly and honestly welcoming people into their world, using their platform to candidly document their life, from coming out to getting top surgery. It’s the kind of storytelling that queer kids crave and deserve.
“second” is rooted in the guitar and their textured yet resonant vocals. Miki describes how the track addresses their anxiety around getting top surgery: “I had this underlying fear that I would lose people in my life after this surgery. This song specifically talks about my relationship with my girlfriend and being worried that once my body changes, she’s not going to love me anymore.” But that fear is transformed into acceptance as Miki’s girlfriend joins at the end on vocals, and the realization is made that being “happy with yourself is ultimately going to make you a better partner.”
Miki is joined by their girlfriend, Hope, in the beautifully filmed and moving video for “second.” They say, “I knew I wanted the video to represent queer bodies and relationships in the most authentic way. Before getting my top surgery, I really wish I had seen more representation of what queer bodies can look like, and that they can be loved.”
