Introducing alt/indie artist Philine Sonny; Announces ‘Invader’ EP + Shares New Single “Drugs”

September 29, 2023 BY Bailey Vigliaturo

Philine Sonny is immediate. Her music compels you to want to dance, cry, scream, and you’ll want to roll the windows down and go for an endless drive. The German-born alternative singer-songwriter and producer is a master of hook-packed, guitar driven pop catharsis, and she’s only just getting started.

Today, Philine Sonny shares her new single “Drugs” alongside her signing announcement to Nettwerk and forthcoming EP Invader out March 1, 2024. The tongue-in-cheek “Drugs” springs to life with dreamy, layered vocals, plaintive guitar, and a soaring chorus. It touches upon those coming-of-age movie moments, where there’s excitement in the air but altruistically the characters, young and in love, come to different crossroads, unsure where to find road to the next frontier of life.

Philine Sonny shares this about her new single,

“‘Drugs’ is the soundtrack to the movie playing in your head. It’s a romanticized idea of what life would look like if one was bold and reckless enough to let go of fear and daring to lose everything for the sake of feeling alive.”

Directed by Fabian Süggeler, the “Drugs” music video showcases two distinct levels: one with a captivating drawn image effect, achieved through meticulous photo printing and stop-motion techniques, and another featuring a “real-life” sequence filmed at a junkyard. Philine dedicated countless hours to perfecting the stop-motion effect, and the stunning result speaks for itself.

Philine’s evocative storytelling and edgy, alternative resonance is on full display with “Drugs,” offering listeners a compelling preview into her forthcoming Invader EP out early next year.

More Info:

A self-described “loner” and introvert, 21-year-old Philine Sonny grew up in a small German city, spending much of her free time hunkered down in her bedroom, where she taught herself how to write and produce. A DIY approach has always been instilled with Philine’s creative endeavors. Beyond writing and producing her own material, she creates and edits a lot of her media—from visualizers and vlogs to canvases and artworks while dabbling with stop motion for upcoming content. Lyrically, she draws inspiration from close relationships while unpacking how it feels to experience depression, imposter syndrome in friendships, and growing up in a hometown that never felt like a home to her.

Philine Sonny’s career took off in a whirlwind since releasing her first EP Lose Yourself in 2022. Being positioned early on as an emerging talent to watch by the likes of Wonderland and Notion, Philine has already caught international attention with her unmatched ear, intimate live sets, and eclectic taste, which ranges from Sam Fender, Clairo, Holly Humberstone, Ben Howard, Bryan Adams, Bleachers, and her all-time favorite, Bruce Springsteen. In the run up to releasing her next EP, Philine made waves at the 2023 SXSW and Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival, where fans and industry members instantly connected to her fresh onstage charisma and willingness to tackle heady emotional subjects. Philine will be supporting Ian Hooper and Medium Build on select European dates this fall.
