“We’re all fucking exhausted. We’re all going through it… I just wanted to share some of the love I’ve been fortunate to have around me” – Kitt

Kitt (formerly known as Katherine Penfold) is an indie soul artist in the midst of a creative rebirth. In 2019, she released her full-length debut Sweetest Thing under the Penfold name, introducing her “as a dynamic performer and an artist to watch moving forward” [EARMILK]. In 2021, she returns. But with a new name propelled by a deep sense of self-discovery. Having always been Kitt to close friends, she wanted her music persona to reflect a similar level of vulnerability and intimacy. “As much as I appreciate my given name, walking on-stage to sing my originals – the authentic sound I want to bring to listeners – it never felt like a match,” she says. Adding, “through the massive life shifts and realizations of the last two years, I felt ready to present Kitt to everyone. I never imagined how good it would feel.

On November 26, Kitt will release Within You, a 6-track personal project that chronicles the end of her marriage, and more importantly, her path forward. “All of the songs I’ve been writing for this EP have been real-life, recent moments. That includes heartache and deep depression, but also the other side of the coin when those hurdles have fallen behind me and I felt stronger, almost ready for more (almost).

With jazz-inflected vocals layered over dreamy keys and a simple yet intentional guitar arrangement, the latest single shines. On Friday, Kitt will release “Amnesia,” the follow-up to her inspiring first single, “I’ll Be Alright.” A soulful, reflective production, “Amnesia” is about the power of friendship, leaning into social connections when feelings of isolation are amplified – as best explained by Kitt, ”the friends that help us through some of the darkest moments, in order to manifest incredible ones.” At the end of the self-produced number comes a conversational clip between Kitt and “one of my dearest friends/mentors, Dee Daniels.” Kitt adds, “she calls this time amnesia, when we forget how powerful we are and why we’re here. I call Dee, and she always reminds me.”

Based in Vancouver, BC, Kitt draws inspiration from R&B contemporaries like Charlotte Day Wilson, Snoh Aalegra, and Jorja Smith. Aside from music, she is the creative director for Sandstone Studios in Vancouver conceptualizing and directing videos for independent musicians.
