Rising indie artist philine is thrilled to announce her much-anticipated new EP, “the side effects of living in a fantasy”, set for release on November 8th 2024. Ahead of the EP, philine unveils her latest single, “confused,” available today on all streaming platforms. Accompanying the release is a visually striking music video that perfectly encapsulates the song’s themes of uncertainty and the awkwardness of budding romance.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the music video, philine shares, “In the music video, I wanted to capture the early stages of dating someone, where it’s still a little awkward and new, and you don’t really know what to think about it. For me, almost all of the relationships and dating experiences I’ve had started in the summer. So I knew right away when we decided to shoot a music video that it had to be some sort of road trip vibe. I really like the way it captures the ‘coming of age’ feeling that I also get when I play ‘confused’ live.”
“confused” is driven by a steady drum tempo that mirrors the anxiousness and uncertainty of a nascent love between two opposite personalities. philine’s evocative lyrics, “Had to stay over ‘cause I missed my train. Felt like you kissed me as a favor,” explore the internal struggle of trying to decipher emotions in a relationship that might just be a rebound. “I had just come out of another relationship, and I was dating this girl to get over my ex-girlfriend,” she reveals. “I couldn’t explain how I felt. I thought, ‘Maybe there’s something more here, and we can make this work.’ I had to write a song about it because I couldn’t decide if I had feelings for her or not.”
The EP “the side effects of living in a fantasy” is a deeply personal journey through the complexities of love, self-discovery, and emotional turbulence. Tracks like the upbeat and existential “matter” and the raw and candid “your house, my house” showcase philine’s ability to turn her internal dialogue into bold melodies and hypnotic soundscapes. Through “the side effects of living in a fantasy”, philine bares her heart and mind in every song, resonating with listeners who find themselves navigating the ups and downs of life. “It’s okay to be confused about life and experience ups and downs,” she reflects. “I hope my music can connect people. We’re all dealing with things in our own ways. We shouldn’t focus on what separates us, but what connects us.”
philine’s EP is poised to be a standout release this year, further cementing her status as an artist to watch.
More about philine
When philine writes a song, she invites everyone to spend a little time inside of her head.
Her tender voice, delicate tunes, and vivid lyrics grab your attention right away, but it’s her wild imagination that really hooks you and, ultimately, inspires. It’s as if she’s turning her feelings into real-life magic, letting her thoughts dance around in catchy melodies and shimmering chords. After quietly buzzing out of The Netherlands, the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist opens her world on her upcoming EP, set to release later this year.
Early on, she recognized the power of music. Mom taught music to kindergarten-age kids in addition to constantly singing and playing guitar around the house. Transfixed by her mother, philine went from penning her own songs in Dutch to writing in English at 11-years-old. After participating in a professional songwriting competition as a teen, she recognized her path forward. “That’s when I decided I wanted to be a professional songwriter and musician,” she notes. She attended a conservatory in Rotterdam, logging countless hours in the studio with friends. During 2020, she formally introduced herself with the single “gone.” The songstress further built momentum with her debut “so sick of myself” EP [2023], generating streams in the millions. Not to mention, she joined Melle for “Old Summers,” which reeled in over 524K Spotify streams. Throughout 2023, she absorbed inspiration from the world around her and wrote what she saw, felt, and experienced.
