Indie Artist & Producer Hayden Calnin Shares New Track “Mountain Steeps”
August 3, 2020 BY Nettwerk
Lush indie-folk singer-songwriter and producer Hayden Calnin shares his new single, “Mountain Steeps,” from his forthcoming EP, Soon Forever, out September 4th, 2020 via Nettwerk. American Songwriter, who premiered the track earlier this week, called it a “dreaming and evocative ballad.”
Hayden explains, “’Mountain Steeps’ was recorded in my home studio on the Mornington Peninsula, Australia. I was having a lot of dreams that felt quite real (until I woke up) and that really played a huge role in how I engineered the song. I wanted it to feel other worldly, which is why I included a lot of digitally processed backing vocals and a vocoder-esc treatment laying underneath it all. When all those layers sat under the main vocal, it really played a huge part in directing where the song was going to go from that point.” He added, “Isolation from your usual environment can sometimes make your life feel like you are living in a dream. I take myself on a walk or run almost every day. It’s my time to reflect on all the things happening in my life and the world over. ‘Mountain Steeps’ captures a couple of those thoughts I often find myself coming back to on those outings. Lots of self-reflection.”

Hayden, who directed and edited the video himself says, “Since lockdowns have been in place here in Australia, I’ve been keeping outdoor activities close to home. I live in a pretty special place and I wanted to capture something that felt like a little adventure and piece of my daily life.”
While establishing himself as a sought-after producer, he released a trio of EPS and a two-LP series—Cut Love, Pt. 1 and Cut Love, Pt. 2— that endeared him to his growing international fan base. 2019’s A Life You Would Choose EP elevated him to further critical acclaim from Earmilk, CLASH, Magnetic Magazine, Atwood and more. Not to mention, the lead single “Warm With You” gathered 1.7 million streams to date, bringing his total stream tally past the 30-million mark by 2020. No stranger to touring, he has shared the stage with Matt Corby, Tom Odell, The Antlers and more. During this time, he also produced records for buzzing Aussies like Didirri, the aforementioned Harrison Storm, Riley Pearce, Woodlock, NYCK, and others. Expanding his influence, Hayden’s catalog can be heard in popular television shows such as Suits, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, The 100, and So You Think You Can Dance USA as well as the UK trailer for Academy® Award-nominated favorite Room.
