Ian Ewing Returns w/ New EP ‘In The Sky,’ Lofi Chill-hop for the Anchoring Sky
September 3, 2025 BY Emma Orland
So-Cal artist/producer/drumming savant Ian Ewing is excited to share his new EP, In The Sky, via Nettwerk. In the Sky is Ian’s newest EP since he welcomed his first child into the world. Fully inspired by the constants felt throughout life, the title references using the sky as a grounding force despite time and life passing in a linear fashion; the sky is constant and unchanging, like an anchor.
In the Sky features producer Philanthrope, producer/collage artist Howiewonder, and saxophonist Lofi Sax across six tracks. The project blends Lofi chillhop with hip-hop and jazz. Ultimately, when Ian looks to the sky, In the Sky presents a collection of moods and sounds.
Ian shares, “Sonically, I was inspired to create a collection of songs that encompasses as much of my musical identity as possible, acknowledging my tastes old and new. Leaning on nostalgia, I aimed to create a timeless feeling with the EP. This concept also inspired me mentally and emotionally through the creative process, as, now a new father, I thought much of the cyclical nature of space and time, and how my son, too, will be able to experience so much about what I love in this world. At the same time, the unchanging sky looks down on us both.”

The lead single from In The Sky is the welcoming instrumental “Crescent Bay.” It’s a laid-back hip-hop beat that is electrified, downtempo, and lo-fi. It’s jazzy and smooth and demands a rapper or a singer to freestyle over the lush layers. The title track “In the Sky” is moody and layered, blending electronic elements with chillhop beats. The result is an emotional, reflective, nostalgic, and inviting instrumental. As the title suggests, this one feels up in the clouds.
The EP then shifts to “Youth,” which features frequent collaborator and close friend Philanthrope. Here, the two craft a laid-back beat that blends electronic elements with lo-fi styles. The result is a dreamy instrumental that feels grounded and up in the clouds. “Youth” is followed by “Cirrus,” which features producer/collage artist Howiewonder and saxophonist Lofi Sax. The three crafted a lo-fi chillhop track that blends hip-hop with jazz.
PREVIOUSLY:
In 2023, Ian Ewing released a whopping four EPs with Nettwerk (Second Summer, Where I’ll Be, Swim, and Gail). Inspired by Yussef Dayes’ recent “Live From Malibu” session, Ewing sought to create a live session of his own, to put an extra spotlight on some of his favorite songs from the banner year. The result is an analog audiovisual experience that feels like sitting on a couch in the living room of close friends.

ABOUT IAN EWING
Ian Ewing is a self-taught instrumentalist, producer, and artist who blends a smooth mix of hip hop, electronica, and R&B to create a sound that has been supported and showcased by Chillhop Music, SiriusXM, BBC One Extra, Soulection, Complexion’s Future Beats Show, Indie Shuffle, and much more.
At a young age he fell in love with hip hop and its history. This was his gateway into electronic beat production, where he finds himself today, as he strives to create ambient compositions of sample-based sounds blended with his own instrumentation. His lifelong love affair with the drums infuses organic rhythmic elements into his music, drawing on influences from various drummers, from John Bonham and Ginger Baker to Yussef Dayes and Benny Greb.
Ewing’s music is also directly influenced by the outdoors and how we experience it. Whether skimboarding a shorebreak wave, snowboarding a snow-capped mountain, or hiking a wooded trail, Ewing’s inspiration of organic sounds and senses lies in celebrating the natural world and all its wonders.
Ewing has headlined various shows across the US and collaborated and toured with artists including Flamingosis, Louis Futon, Joey Pecoraro, Anomalie, Galimatias, and Cautious Clay. A prolific drummer, his sounds have been sampled by the likes of Frank Ocean, Victoria Monét, Loyle Carner, and Tek of Smif N Wessun. While his music claims to be “the official soundtrack of hummus everywhere,” this has yet to be confirmed.
