Hayden Calnin Shares Transformative New EP “All Kinds Of Light “; Video For Single “Mornings In Tabio” Out Now

August 9, 2024 BY Emma Orland

Today, Melbourne-based indie folk singer, songwriter and producer Hayden Calnin shares his new EP All Kinds of Light, a collection of eight tracks inspired by a trip to Colombia in 2023. On his travels, he ventured into the country’s vast mountains to study various light phenomena and record sounds as part of a documentary score, and in between travelling, investigating, and studying, he transformed his worldview – it is this experience that you’ll uncover on his new record, out today via Nettwerk. You can listen to the record HERE

Across a series of acclaimed projects, Hayden has carved out his signature, intricate blend of acoustic folk melodies, lush, gentle soundscapes, and glitchy, otherworldly production – all of it held together by his rich, haunting vocal. Throughout South America he collected samples of chimes, flutes, birds chirping, and flames crackling, grafting the wonders of his surroundings to tape in the studio, and adding another layer to his expansive sonic palette.

Fluttering melodies float through a haze of analog synths, organic percussion, lush keys, and naturally-sourced samples, all of it stitched together in an evocative, ethereal, and emotional tapestry of texture and tone, ready to transport listeners to the vast, sprawling beauty of the gateway to South America.

This whole body of work distils the way light affected me and inspired the record. There’s an important mystery to light, but that’s the beauty of the whole thing,” Hayden says.

“The whole journey gave me this batch of songs. We were meeting all of these people and enjoying such amazing experiences. Every song has a sample that represents the place or subject it’s about.”

From the soaring, shimmering, building atmosphere of “Greetings at Majuy” that opens All Kinds Of Light – transporting you in an instant to the expansive, magical beauty of Colombia – to the blissful melodies and delicate sonic architecture of “Lake Tota”, the glowing, cinematic production, sound and emotion of “All These Kinds of Light”, the glitchy synths, bold drums and heavenly hook of “As Above, So Below”, or the floating, expansive melodies of both “Majuy” and “La Peña de Juaica” – the former with its hypnotic vocal, the latter a spellbinding instrumental – each representing the mountain ranges of their namesake – every moment of All Kinds Of Light is as transcendent and transportive as the trip that inspired it.

‘All Kinds Of Light’ is a body of work inspired by spending some time in Colombia, South America in 2023. This body of work uses sounds I’ve collected while travelling to create music that speaks predominantly about positive growth as a person and also about light in all its spectrums, and how it can really shape and affect you to your core,” Hayden says.

It’s a timestamp for me, about a really transformative trip to a part of the world I had not seen before. It taught me so many life lessons and I’m so thankful for that. I felt transformed, loved, and appreciative. I really did come back with a new perspective and view on life and my place within it.”
