Hayden Calnin Announces New EP “All Kinds Of Light” Out August 9; Shares New Single “All These Kinds Of Light”

May 31, 2024 BY Emma Orland

Across a series of acclaimed projects, Melbourne-based indie folk singer, songwriter and producer Hayden Calnin has carved out his signature, intricate blend of acoustic folk melodies, lush, gentle soundscapes, and glitchy, otherworldly production – all of it held together by his rich, haunting vocal. It is this artistry, paired with a worldview shifting experience, that you’ll uncover on his new EP, All Kinds Of Light. The record, featuring recent singles “Majuy” and “Lake Tota”, alongside today’s new release “All These Kinds Of Light”, will be out on August 9 via Nettwerk Music Group.

Hayden’s previous record, A Turning Of The Tide – released in two parts – came to life across 2023. He described that record as his “big change album…closing of the old and stepping into the new.” Where change was the theme of Hayden’s previous body of work, true transformation – of himself, his view of the world, and his place within it – is central to his forthcoming release, All Kinds Of Light.

Last year, Hayden took a trip to Colombia to work on a documentary that investigated and explored light phenomena across the South American country, and the stories and myths that surround it. It was this experience, and the way it changed him, that inspired Hayden’s new EP. Spread across the record’s tracklisting are places and mountains in Colombia, an ode to the memories and experiences that shaped it.

‘All Kinds Of Light’ is a body of work inspired by spending some time in Colombia, South America in 2023. This body of work uses sounds I’ve collected while travelling to create music that speaks predominantly about positive growth as a person and also about light in all its spectrums, and how it can really shape and affect you to your core.

It’s a timestamp for me, about a really transformative trip to a part of the world I had not seen before. It taught me so many life lessons and I’m so thankful for that,” Hayden says. “I felt transformed, loved, and appreciative. I really did come back with a new perspective and view on life and my place within it.”

Today, Hayden shares one of the EP’s most important moments, “All These Kinds Of Light”.  Where most of the record came to Hayden in a flurry of inspiration and creativity, “All These Kinds of Light” arrived months later, after he’d had time and distance to pause and reflect on all the things he had seen, learned, and shared, and all the ways he had changed because of them.

Of the track, Hayden says, “One thing I noticed while travelling through Colombia was just how different the light felt in that part of the world. Watching it creep through the leaves of the forests, the glow of the moon and how it would light up the whole night, the flames of the fires burning different at such high altitudes, the dark and intense storms brewing over mountains, and the lightning strikes showing glimpses of the landscape when it would flash. Light can affect you in so many ways, change your mood, inspire thought and art. This song was certainly an ode to all the different ways we can interact with light.”

While the track is inspired by a destination half a world away, the video for “All These Kinds Of Light” sees Hayden connecting with the natural world closer to home – in the Tea Tree Trail on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

The song is about feeling connected to everything and being one with it all – this was a lesson Hayden learnt in Colombia, and it was also the direction he gave to Jareen Wee and David Eap, the dancers featured in the video. The result is a piece of art that embraces and showcases the track’s key message, in Hayden’s own words, “Light, it’s what this all is…We are one and everything, and I’m celebrating that. Around all the chaos, there’s a beautiful world.”
