German-Based Singer-Songwriter M. Byrd Harnesses The Power Of Self-Reflection On His New EP ‘In Breech”
December 6, 2024 BY Emma Orland
German-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer M. Byrd explores profound reflection after grappling with transformative life events on his latest EP In Breech. The EP blends atmospheric soundscapes with introspective lyrics, anchored by heartfelt storytelling centered around the birth of his child. Listen HERE.
“In a way, I was trying to write myself out of feeling stuck on this project,” M. Byrd reveals about In Breech. “I just had my first child, and it felt like there was a new chapter. I was filled with beautiful feelings, but I was also a bit anxious. I tried to capture the sensation of shakiness and put it into the music. I had been trying to dig deeper into what the M. Byrd sound is, and I’m defining it. This time around, I allowed myself to keep things a little more imperfect.”
Music drew M. Byrd into its magnetic pull during his childhood. He drummed away in front of the family television set at the age of three, picking up his old man’s guitar shortly thereafter. He wielded his chops at roots jams and wrote and recorded music of his own. His 2020 debut single “Mountain” eclipsed 10 million Spotify streams followed by “Morning Sun” with over 5 million Spotify streams. He continued to evolve on the Orion EP in 2021. He dropped his 2023 full-length debut, The Seed, to widespread praise from EUPHORIA. and 1883 Magazine.
In its wake, he crafted what would become In Breech. Splitting time between Hamburg and Denmark, he explored different sounds and vibes as he penned tunes. Alongside co-producer John Joseph, he brought the EP to life. M. Byrd continues to map out his own path through an ever-evolving web of alternative, indie, and pop accented by shoegaze and synth transmissions on In Breech out now via Nettwerk.
“I hope that people feel like these songs are a space they can come back to when they are going through a drastic change in life,” he explains. “I hope they can find comfort in them whenever things are feeling a little chaotic. I just want these songs to take you on a journey. Maybe someone is able to overcome a fear after listening, or maybe they can finally let go of something that has been weighing them down. I’m just excited to be in a space where I can be more personal than ever and share that with people in my music.”
