Critical Quotes On Indian Ocean

“Ford’s second solo album comes marinated in the soul tradition inherent to its birthplace, and seasoned liberally by the influence of her legendary backing band… Her pronunciation seems clearer, her voice seems more confident, her band seems brighter and louder, and her lyrics seem sharper at every corner. “— NPR First Listen

“An album that transcends its influence..she stands centre of this LP like a quiet testifying force.”  — Mojo (4 Stars)

“Frazey Ford takes an unexpected turn on her forthcoming album…The result is gorgeous.” — KCRW “Today’s Top Tune”

“Cradled lovingly in the keyboard swell of Charles Hodges, the lazy basslines of Leroy Hodges and the sublime interjections of Teenie Hodges’s guitar, Ford delivers her masterpiece.” — The Sunday Times Culture “Album of the Week” (UK)

“With subtle vibrato and pulsing emotion, Ford’s velvety vocals take center stage in ‘September Fields’…the electric organ in the track transforms her normally aching lullaby into something funkier and full of sunshine.” — Mother Jones

“[Indian Ocean] fuses patiently simmering Southern soul grooves with uncommonly intelligent songwriting.” — Philadelphia Inquirer

“Indian Ocean grooves so smoothly, with the Hi Rhythm Section holding down some of the finest support you’ll hear this year.” — No Depression

“[Frazey] sounds like a women liberated…her understated yet distinctive croon she still reaches new striking emotional heights”  — Uncut

The follow up to 2010’s critically acclaimed ObadiahIndian Ocean is a lush album filled with songs about pain and dealing with tough truths, but also about love, contrition and being bold. Part of what gives this album its gilded edge is the work of The Hi Rhythm Section, the iconic architects of the Al Green’s instrumental sound. Ford is the beneficiary of their almighty talents, the trio accentuating her sensual and opulent vocals with deep-bottomed bass, subtle backbeats, and airy flights of organ. Indian Ocean was recorded, mixed and mastered between Memphis’s historic Royal Studios and Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios.
