Flower Face Releases “Cat’s Cradle – Spanish Version” with CDMX Artist Samanez; Donating Proceeds to United We Dream
September 19, 2025 BY Emma Orland
Today, Montreal goth folk artist Flower Face (Ruby McKinnon) teams up with Mexico City-based artist Samanez to release “Cat’s Cradle – Spanish Version,” a rework of “Cat’s Cradle” from her latest album Girl Prometheus. Listen to “Cat’s Cradle – Spanish Version” here: https://flowerface.ffm.to/catscradle_spanishversion.
Ruby and Samanez first crossed paths at a writers camp at Casa de Copas Studios in Mexico City back in June. Samanez translated a verse of Flower Face’s “Cat’s Cradle” to Spanish and they sang the song together in both languages. Today, they are officially releasing the collaboration with proceeds from the single going to United We Dream, a national network of immigrant youth working to advance justice for immigrants and communities of color through advocacy, organizing, and empowerment.
“My first time in Mexico introduced me to so many inspiring artists and people in the music community. We connected, made music together, and it was such a beautiful time of collaboration between cultures. It reminded me of the power music holds,” Ruby explains. “I have family in the US that works directly with undocumented immigrants, and as someone who lives in Canada, it’s easy to feel powerless as I hear stories of families being torn apart from one another.
“Human rights are universal, and I have been moved to partner with United We Dream because of the way they advocate for immigrant youth, especially LGBT youth, through a community-based, inclusive approach. Their work shows how powerful collective action can be, and if my music can play even a small role in supporting that, I’m grateful.”
Samanez furthers, “For me, collaborating on this project with Flower Face was really exciting from the beginning. I really connected with the song through the ‘rewriting’ session we had here in Mexico City. And I’m really happy with the final version, I listen to it daily.”

About Flower Face:
Flower Face is the project of Montreal-based singer, songwriter, and multi-disciplinary artist Ruby McKinnon. Known for her tender yet haunting voice and cinematic approach to storytelling, McKinnon creates music that turns heartbreak, grief, and renewal into something luminous and universal.
Classically trained in piano since childhood, she began writing and recording as a teenager, self-producing early releases in true DIY fashion. Over time, Flower Face’s music has garnered critical acclaim from The New York Times, Stereogum, Billboard, and more, earning comparisons to Daughter, Big Thief, and Mazzy Star, while carving out a sound all her own — delicate yet expansive, confessional yet transportive.
Her Nettwerk debut, The Shark in Your Water (2022), introduced a broader audience to her deeply intimate songwriting. Its follow-up, Girl Prometheus, expands her world with 11 tracks that range from hushed ballads to sweeping symphonies, chronicling transformation in the aftermath of heartbreak.
Also a visual artist, McKinnon designs her own cover art and directs her videos, making Flower Face not just a musical project but a fully realized creative universe.
