Electronic Artist Mishegas Signs To Nettwerk; Shares “Untitled”
November 6, 2020 BY Nettwerk
Today, Mexico-born and New York City-based artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Emilio Quezada Ibañez aka Mishegas shares his upbeat atmospheric track, “Untitled.” The track is his first release since signing to Nettwerk this fall.
Mishegas says, “I spent time in Mexico City with my family one winter and was incessantly listening to Jake McMullen’s cover of Dancing on My Own, Phoenix’s Wolfgang Amadeus, Big Thief, and Clairo while driving through rural parts of the country. Spending lots of time in a car made me want to write a song for that environment; similar to what I was listening to at the time. Once I was back home, the core of the song came about in a few hours. But for something that came about so naturally, it was incredibly difficult to finish. Even the name of the song was just a placeholder. It’s been a long and difficult process, but I’m happy with the fact that it fits into the ambiguous space that I’m trying to explore in my music. I’m not sure if I ever fully had an end vision in mind. Leaving it ‘Untitled’ felt right.“

Mishegas, a Yiddish word that can be interpreted as hectic, crazy, or eccentric – all terms used to describe elements of his sound – is a talented multi-hyphenate with backgrounds in film, sports, travel, design, and skincare content (he co-maintains the influential Dewy Dudes podcast and social media). Born in a small town outside Mexico City, he moved to the U.S. with his family at a young age and lived in multiple places throughout the American Southeast and Midwest, before moving to Chicago for college and eventually to his current home in New York. He credits his transient existence as one of the reasons his music is comprised of such rich diversity. Beginning with the Spanish classical guitar and eventually gravitating to electronic music in college, Quezada realized that his introverted nature in addition to his isolated rural surroundings were pushing him toward a creative endeavor best practiced in solitude. He fills his songs with distinct noise, often piling effects on recorded instruments, field recordings, or samples, then tinkering with them—adding those textures and atmospheres—until they reach a point that he finds interesting. Having released a steady stream of acclaimed singles over the past few years, he is working on his debut EP to come in 2021.
