darkDARK Shares “Watercolors” From Debut Album ‘Feel So Much’ (Out February 26)

darkDARK – the producer-performer duo of Chris James and Genevieve Vincent – shares new track “Watercolors” from the full-length debut album Feel So Much (out February 26 via Nettwerk Records).

Describing the song, the duo says, “‘Watercolors’ is about healing from trauma by letting memories fade in time. Words of comfort to your younger more vulnerable self; coming to your own rescue because no one was there when you needed them. Time erodes memories like water erodes watercolor paints. Your memories dissolve and that fading protects you.”

As a duo, they don’t have defined roles – they pass it back and forth sometimes more than a dozen times, adding and subtracting elements until it hits an aural sweet spot. Mixer Andrew Maury (Shawn Mendes, Lizzo, Post Malone) comes in at the end, to put some final touches on a track. “I would call our music a pastiche of elements,” Chris explains. “All of our original stuff pulls from all these different directions, and we just let it flourish. If I start something and send it to Chris,” says Genevieve, “he always takes it somewhere I never would’ve thought of.” Like, the emotional kaleidoscope in the lyrics for “Watercolors” sounds like an actual explosion of colors. The duo used analog synths and animal sound effects, which ended up permeating many of their songs, to achieve this.

About darkDARK:

There is an uncanny futurism beating inside darkDARK, the duo of Chris James and Genevieve Vincent that pairs cinematic synths with modern pop. You feel this in the tidal push-and-pull of their latest EP We forget when we’re apart. and their forthcoming debut album Feel So Much (via Nettwerk Records). Genevieve (darkDARK’s co-songwriter, co-producer, and main vocalist) is a classically trained composer/producer and former music supervisor who has scored films (The Broken Heart Gallery, Moving Art, Now Is The Time) and written orchestral concert music. Meanwhile, Chris (co-songwriter, co-producer, and additional vocalist) is a go-to composer, mixer, and sound designer who’s worked on spots for Nike, Google, Levi’s, and Audi. Most recently, the duo was approached to remix Nina Simone’s “New World Coming,” as part of a larger collection of tracks.  Consequently, the remix was featured in the final 30-sec Joe Biden ad, prior to the election.  The secret to their synchronicity lies in their work practice; with Genevieve in Los Angeles and Chris in Austin, they pass it back and forth sometimes more than a dozen times, adding and subtracting elements until it hits an aural sweet spot.
