Congratulations to Latin GRAMMY nominee and vocalist Maria Mendes, together with GRAMMY award-winning Metropole Orkest, led by conductor, jazz pianist/composer John Beasley on their “Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals” GRAMMY nomination for standout track, “Asas Fechadas (feat. Metropole Orkest & John Beasley).”  A symphonic jazz approach to fado, the record was released on Mendes’ latest album Close To Me (out now via Justin Time and Nettwerk Records).

“A great affection for fado music and its poetic lyrics, an appreciation for how a jazz palette can color the form, and a love of orchestral seasonings all influence this expansive outing from Maria Mendes. It’s an effort that’s far from the norm and right where the Portuguese vocalist lives and loves to be”  – All About Jazz

“Fado is not a genre that’s well-known to the average listener, but after hearing vocalist Maria Mendes’ jazzy version of that melancholy Portuguese music style, one is easily transported into its depths. On ‘Close to Me,’ Mendes executes an eloquent love letter to her homeland of Portugal, but instead of using fado’s traditional stringed instrumentation, she adds a symphonic touch” – JazzTimes
