Bre Kennedy Returns with Rich Organic Pop-Anthem “Retrospect”

March 31, 2023 BY Jason Currell

With heart-on-her-sleeve lyricism and intimate and infectious delivery, Bre Kennedys songs disclose her innermost thoughts, fears, and dreams with a novelist’s attention to detail. Today, the California-bred singer, songwriter, and producer returns with “Retrospect,” a rich, organic pop anthem about letting go of the past. Using her signature style, Kennedy continues to detail sharp storytelling with an energetic and vibrant pop scope, transmitting raw emotions with a sense of universality. On “Retrospect,” Kennedy shares, “I spent too much wondering what could’ve been, would’ve been, should have been, and I want to show up to life where I’m at right now. So much has changed in the world and in my life, I’ve grown a lot and I can see some of it in retrospect now. I can’t wait to share all of the songs that came from this realization.

“Retrospect” comes months after Kennedy’s December 2022 EP, Clarity, a collection of four vulnerable, intimate, and heartfelt tracks. Clarity was initially teased with the inviting anthem “Ribbon” and the cinematic “Before I Have A Daughter,” which was co-written with Lori McKenna. Flipping through her journal, one word stared back at Bre from various pages. Without realizing it, she had jotted down “Clarity” multiple times. Its meaning, i.e., “understanding, spoke volumes to how far she had come in a short time. She presented Clarity as a sonic reflection of her personal metamorphosis over the past year, leading her to a clearer and more hopeful perspective.
