Blanco White Releases Transportive New Single “Silver Beaches”
August 11, 2023 BY Jason Currell
Blanco White has released his transportive new single “Silver Beaches“, the second track to be shared from upcoming album Tarifa, out 29th September via Nettwerk (Miya Folick, Matt Maltese). The new album release will coincide with a headline run across the US, Canada and Europe this autumn, culminating in a homecoming show at the Barbican in London on 21st November. “Silver Beaches” follows the release of the album’s title track last month.
Blanco White has already crafted a sound of his own with his off-world explorations of Latin American and Andalusian folk music. On Tarifa, Josh Edwards’ second solo album, he mines new depth within his colourful fusions of folk with indie and electronics, while embracing the thrill of collaboration, discovery and cultural exchange.
The album was self-produced in collaboration with Nubiyan Twist‘s Pilo Adami, with additional production from Nathan Jenkins aka Bullion (Nilüfer Yanya, Orlando Weeks, Hayden Thorpe), alongside contributions from percussionist Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Sons Of Kemet).
Edwards’ collaboration with percussionist and co-producer Adami places a strong focus on rhythm, syncopation and swing throughout the album, with newly released dream-folk odyssey “Silver Beaches” providing the initial catalyst for the album’s sonic identity, specifically noting the impact of Assouf / desert blues pioneers; Mali-based music collective Tinariwen on the creation of “Silver Beaches”.

Of the new single, Edwards said: “I began writing this song with Pilo Adami in the summer of 2022. We’d done some recording sessions as instrumentalists in the past on Malena Zavala’s Abbey Rd sessions for her album ‘La Yarará’, and once on my own music, and I’d always thought it could be really interesting to try and write something together. I brought the verse organ progression from what would become ‘Silver Beaches’ into the session at Pilo’s studio, and we started working on the arrangement from there. I was really impressed by Pilo’s instincts, and I felt our taste overlapped in a really interesting way. Pilo is a multi-instrumentalist and producer from southern Brazil. Although he’s a phenomenal guitarist, his percussion playing and drum style left the biggest mark on the whole album. This was the first song we worked on together and it was incredibly exciting for me because I felt I had found a collaborator who could really help me develop my ideas and take the music to a new place. This first song was a catalyst for finding an identity for the whole album, and it became a gateway track leading to new ideas that might fit alongside it. Lyrically the track changed and evolved over time, but the lyric ‘Silver Beaches’ appeared early on. I was imagining a dream like space of a beach at night. That surrealist image fed into the production and identity of the song, and I always felt I was picturing somewhere on a planet different to Earth.”
Inspired by world-building songwriters like Sufjan Stevens and composers such as Hiroshi Yoshimura; the lyrical themes on Blanco White’s second album Tarifa move from cosmic wonder and our potential isolation in the universe, to hinting at the abstract and metaphysical, drawing from Edwards’ ongoing recovery from a debilitative chronic pain diagnosis.
Tarifa straddles numerous genres, leaning into dream pop references like Beach House with extensive use of organs and synths, alongside more organic instrumentation and percussion. Its tender, folk-leaning poetic side draws on sources like Feist, with the acoustic Andean instruments the charango and ronroco remaining centrepieces of Blanco White’s sound.
Rooted in resilience, recovery and relief, Tarifa is as much an album about healing as it is one about escape, exploring new worlds, and building new worlds of his own.
Blanco White released his debut album On the Other Side in 2020, which has since seen over 130 million streams, and has received wide praise from CLASH Magazine, The Independent, Billboard, Wonderland Magazine, Pop Matters, American Songwriter and more, and has embarked on numerous global tours including support runs with Jose Gonzalez and Gregory Alan Isakov as well as momentous headline shows of his own, including a sold out night at London’s famous Union Chapel.
Blanco White‘s new album Tarifa is out 29th September via Nettwerk. Blanco White will tour the new album this autumn with dates across North America and Europe, culminating in a momentous homecoming at the Barbican in London on 21st November (tickets here).
