Blanco White Announces New Album ‘Tarifa’ Out September 29th; Releases Title Track

July 14, 2023 BY Jason Currell

Blanco White announces his new album Tarifa (pre-save) out September 29th with Nettwerk, and to celebrate has dropped the lead single and title track. Listen to the moving track inspired by Josh Edwards’ healing experience in Spain after having been diagnosed with a debilitative chronic pain, HERE.

“I booked the trip [to Tarifa] because I had begun to feel more confident in my body’s ability to work intensely on music again after a nerve and chronic pain condition had stopped me from playing and recording altogether. Although I still had symptoms during that time, my pain levels had improved a lot from where they had been in the previous few years, and I wanted to begin pushing myself to see how my body would react”, Edwards explains.

“I wanted this song to capture all the joy I was feeling at being there, working on music again with freedom. It was also written as an invitation after meeting someone new, so it’s meant to feel very open and hopeful. In that way it felt like a reflection on a time where I was just beginning to open myself up again after a break up, getting lost in the excitement that comes with new connection.”

Tarifa is the second full length album from the project of Londoner Josh Edwards following his 2020 debut On the Other Side which has since seen over 130 million streams and led to tours with Jose Gonzalez and Gregory Alan Isakov as well as hugely popular world tours of his own, including a sold out night at London’s famous Union Chapel.

As an album, Tarifa straddles genres, leaning into dream pop references like Beach House with extensive use of organs and synths, alongside more organic instrumentation and percussion. Its tender, folk-leaning poetic side draws on sources like Sufjan Stevens and Feist, with the acoustic Andean instruments the charango and ronroco remaining centrepieces of Blanco White’s sound. Edwards’ collaboration with percussionist and co-producer Adami places a strong focus on rhythm throughout the album, with syncopation and swing at the heart of its identity. Rooted in resilience, recovery and relief, Tarifa is as much an album about healing as it is one about escape, exploring new worlds, and building new worlds of his own.
