Canadian alt-pop duo Bestfriend (comprised of Stacy Kim & Kaelan Geoffrey) returns with their exuberant new single “HEADSTART,” out today via Nettwerk. The track arrives alongside a music video and the announcement of their forthcoming EP, BESTFRIEND HAS AN IDENTITY CRISIS, out May 9, 2025. PRE-SAVE EP HERE.
“HEADSTART” is a vibrant, no-holds-barred confession of infatuation, packaged in a headbanging, chant-laden anthem. The song captures the exhilaration of falling head-over-heels for someone and the urgency of wanting to dive headfirst into something meaningful. Layered with dynamic snares, hi-hats, and an expansive soundscape, “HEADSTART” is an undeniable banger that showcases Bestfriend’s knack for marrying heartfelt lyrics with explosive, shimmering production.
The band reveals, “’HEADSTART’ is definitely almost more of a pitch of what we’d hope we’d do in a situation like this when in reality such vulnerability is like, the hardest thing in the entire world to do. I’m supposed to actively tell someone I’m into them? What if they respond with literally any response of the entire set of possible responses? What then?? Vulnerability is probably one of those lifelong things you work on and never quite nail.”
The forthcoming EP, BESTFRIEND HAS AN IDENTITY CRISIS, dives deep into the chaos of young adulthood with six introspective tracks of indie-pop brilliance. Working alongside producer Aidan Hogg (Jaguar Jonze, G-Flip, Sofia Isella), each song explores themes of uncertainty, self-discovery, and the complexities of human connection. The duo shares, “This is the first EP we’ve collaborated on in person, and it’s really felt like growing up in real time. We embraced all of the messiness, beauty, confusion, heartache, and headache that comes with figuring out who you are and where you’re going. We still haven’t figured it out yet — might not ever, honestly — but at least we figured out this EP, and that feels like a massive win in and of itself.”
Previous singles, “YOU LOOK JUST LIKE ME,” is an escapist anthem about self-reflection and shared struggles. “It’s about being honest with yourself and recognizing the truth of, ‘I have these traits like other people’,” explains Stacy. “We’re struggling in these same ways.” “WHY DO WE DO THIS?” is a dreamy, cathartic track that unfolds like a mantra for life’s repetitive nature. “It’s about waking up every day and asking yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’” Stacy reflects. “The answer is probably different every day, but it’s a question worth asking.”
