Today, LA-based artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist and educator Bad Snacks shares her debut EP Home Music via Nettwerk. Bad Snacks may have gotten her start as a lofi beatmaker but this five-track EP fiercely cements her arrival as a sound vocalist, potent songwriter and supreme architect of funky house grooves. Bad Snacks found a love of music early in life, playing the violin for the first time at the age of 3, but she developed a more concrete sonic identity by immersing herself in LA’s underground music scene, drawing on influences from hip-hop, jazz, and electronica to create a sound that has been described as both “gorgeous” and “stank-face worthy.” After going viral on Andrew Huang’s “4 Producers” sample-flip challenge (4.6M views), Bad Snacks released several instrumental beat tapes to enthusiastic reception, establishing a sound often compared to the stylizations of J Dilla, KAYTRANADA, and TOKiMONSTA. A turning point came in October of 2022 with the release of “Lucky” a dance-pop earworm where she showcased her own vocals for the first time. The confident, slightly vengeful track began her pivot to a sound that she calls “comfortable house,” full of deep grooves, lush textures and a healthy dose of synthesized electric violin, laying the groundwork for Home Music. While more danceable and in-your-face than Bad Snacks’ past work, Home Music retains a sense of intimacy that’s hard to come by in the electronic world characterized by packed nightclubs and relentless bathroom lines. “It started as a joke with my Discord group,” she shares of the title, “but I just love the concept of comfortable house music. I’ve never been much of a rager — I’m kind of straight edge in that way, and so although I love dance music, I sometimes struggle to connect with aspects of the culture surrounding it.” From the calming mantra of lead single “alright, ok” that she uses for “self-gaslighting, or gaslamping” to the vulnerable letter to her ex that is “like u do,” Home Music feels like a string of intimate journal entries. as Bad Snacks recounts a tumultuous chapter in her life — one in which she found herself moving across the country, navigating heartbreak and ultimately searching for the answer to the timeless question: “What is the meaning of ‘home’?” While still in the early stages of her career, Bad Snacks’ music is already resonating across the globe, receiving support from Billboard, NYLON Mag, Brainfeeder’s “The Hit,” KCRW, NTS Radio, Dublab, and Kitsuné Musique. She has played renowned stages such as Red Rocks Amphitheater (Morrison, CO), El Rey (Los Angeles, CA), and The Ogden Theatre (Denver, CO) alongside artists including LP Giobbi, Anomalie and Tycho.
