August 9, 2024 BY Bailey Vigliaturo
Today, dream-pop artist april june unveils her stunning sophomore EP baby’s out of luck again, a captivating blend of storytelling and musical prowess that’s filled with the raw intensity that defines her singular artistry.
Leading the charge is the new washed-out, exhilaratingly up-tempo single “carry you on my broken wings” that steps into the seductive underworld of Italian gangster movies, telling a tale of passion, danger, and untamed desire. Inspired by The Sopranos and Goodfellas, april june describes the song as “an exploration of the tumultuous relationship between the protagonist and her dangerous male counterpart. Clad in a tuxedo, he exudes a sexy, enigmatic allure, navigating the shadows with one hand on her thigh and the other on a gun. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a life where violence and the death drive intertwine. As she carries the weight of her partner on her broken wings, the song becomes a haunting ode to a love that is as sexy as it is wild.” With a mix of risk and yearning, the song evokes a thrilling dance between pleasure and peril.

Alongside the EP release, is the striking “carry you on my broken wings” music video directed by Marco Braia, who effortlessly brings the song’s retro film vibes and april june’s unruffled style to life. april june shares this about the music video, “The music video draws heavily from the Giallo genre, with a particular nod to Italian film director Dario Argento. We shot this in Turin, which is a city where Argento made ‘Profondo Rosso.’ Thematically, I was inspired by the idea of creating a main character and a doppelgänger, a sort of a ‘real’ self and a shadow self. Also, I was really excited to perform getting killed and be covered in blood on camera.”
Featuring standout singles such as “baby’s out of luck again,” “sweeter than drugs,” and “pretty like a rockstar,” the 7-track baby’s out of luck again EP weaves themes of gloom, nostalgia, desire, and uncertainty. Drawing inspiration from films like True Romance, The Virgin Suicides, My Night At Maud’s, Le Beau Mariage, and artists like Stevie Nicks and Lana Del Rey, april june creates a cinematic sound that is both introspective and exhilarating.
For april june, who typically releases one song at a time, unveiling the baby’s out of luck again EP marks a significant achievement. She reflects, “The last time I recorded something this long was 10 years ago. It’s much easier, psychologically, to let go of a song that you’ve written, as opposed to an EP… This project is very special to me. It just has more weight to it.”
