Ambient Composer Six Missing Shares His Full-Length Album ‘Without Mind’

August 8, 2025 BY Emma Orland

Austin-based ambient composer TJ Dumser, aka Six Missing, is known for crafting music you can immerse yourself in. Today, he is proud to release his new full-length album, Without Mind, on Nettwerk. Originally written as an improvised score for ketamine-assisted therapy, these twelve compositions came out of a wildly exploratory writing process—essentially, the outtakes that took on a life of their own. The result is a record that feels spontaneous, playful, and full of raw, in-the-moment expression.

The music drifts like an electric current—psychedelic, textural, and tuned to something just beyond the veil. Earlier this year, in an interview with Synth History, Dumser highlighted components from his home studio, like his collection of analog synths, tape machines, and other elements that help create this engaging new record.

As part of the release, Six Missing unveiled his first music video for the song “Sit Down and Play,” directed by Tatum Annan. Dumser describes the video as “Set between inner stillness and outer motion, and it captures the quiet joy of returning to the body — not to perform but to simply feel.”

Since launching in 2017, Six Missing’s TJ Dumser has quickly established himself as an innovator in the ambient music space. His artist name takes inspiration from a supernatural experience he had in a cabin in rural Pennsylvania that once was the site of the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brandywine, where six participants’ remains were never found. Six Missing has curated thoughtful soundscapes meant for inner-journeying logging collaborations with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, St. Lucia, Ann Annie, Jamie Lidell, Clariloops, and more. He’s amassed millions of listens and received critical praise from Headphone Commute, CLASH, Inverted Audio, and others.

The journey of his new album, Without Mind, begins in liminal spaces and invites listeners to explore the infinite landscapes within. Crafted as an improvised soundtrack for ketamine-assisted therapy sessions, these tracks emerged as outtakes from a deeply experimental writing process. The result is an album alive with spontaneity, capturing the raw immediacy of creation and the transcendent qualities of sound. Through heavy use of a eurorack modular synthesizer, alongside the rich textures of a Moog Matriarch and Minimoog, the music flows like an organic current, shimmering with psychedelic hues and evocative of astral voyages.

At its heart, Without Mind is an invitation to lean in—to close your eyes, put on headphones, and let the soundscapes transport you. This is music not merely to accompany life but to transform it. Each piece serves as a portal, guiding listeners toward introspection, self-discovery, and the uncharted territories of the mind. Inspired by ambient pioneers like Brian Eno, Without Mind seeks to deepen your human experience, reframing the familiar in unexpected and delightful ways. Whether in the stillness of a quiet room or amidst the motion of a bustling city, this is music for journeying—through the self, through time, and through space.

The production of Without Mind represents the most refined and accomplished work Six Missing has presented to date. Every detail, from the intricate sound design to the fluidity of its improvisational core, has been crafted with care and intention. In the past, Dumser may have shied away from explicitly asking listeners to focus deeply on the music, but this time he encourages it. This is not background noise; it is a soundtrack for your life. Allow it to shape your moments, to become a companion to your thoughts, and to guide you inward.
Whether you’re seated with eyes closed, letting the soundscapes unfold your inner world, or listening as you navigate a crowded street, Without Mind offers a lens through which to reimagine your surroundings. It’s a reminder that the ordinary can become extraordinary, that the expected can dissolve into the surreal. This is music for the unexpected, an ambient odyssey inviting you to explore what lies beyond the veil of the everyday. Lean in, let go, and see where it takes you.
